Job Description Summary

The Heldt Bioseparations Laboratory at in the Department of Chemical
Engineering at Michigan Technological University is creating a continuous
bioprocess to create the next generation influenza vaccine and invites
candidates to apply for a postdoctoral fellow position. Research will focus on bioprocessing and biophysical characterization of both the process and the viral product. Fundamental biophysics will be an important part of the project. The work is highly collaborative and will provide opportunities to work with biosafety level 2 viral vectors. The successful candidate will conduct collaborative research within our group and with the rest of the academic team.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

Responsibilities include performing lab experiments, writing proposals,
creating manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals, presenting research results at conferences, supervising graduate and undergraduate research, creating Standard Operating Procedures, and adhering to applicable safety protocols. Some travel may be required.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

Ph.D. in chemical engineering, chemistry, biology, or a closely related field.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

Experience in one of the following fields: cell culture, bioprocessing, downstream purification of bioproducts, microfluidics, biophysics, or AFM.

Desirable Education and/or Experience


Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

Excellent oral and written communication and English language skills.
Excellent interpersonal skills.
Experience with technical writing, especially with publishing research findings in peer-reviewed, English-language journals.
Demonstrated ability to deliver technical information to peer audiences in spoken or written English.
Demonstrated ability to work with group members in a team.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

Experience working with an AFM for force measurements.
Experience obtaining TEM images of small biologics.
Experience in downstream processing of biological molecules.
Experience in mammalian cell culture.

Language, Mathematics and/or Reasoning Skills


Work Environment and/or Physical Demands

The work environment is that of a typical laboratory and/or office setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.

Appointment will be effective as early as January 3, 2022, and applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of renewal pending satisfactory performance. The salary will be based on NIH guidelines and the position is eligible for full benefits.
