Research Scientist II - Infrared Remote Sensing Specialist Michigan Tech Research Institute (Ann Arbor, MI)
The Research Scientist II – Infrared Remote Sensing Specialist position provides leadership and support for MTRI programs focused on the development and application of remote sensing and geospatial analysis to solve governmental and societal needs through sponsored research. Knowledge of remote sensing theory, in particular infrared sensing (IR), and application for environmental science or transportation research is required. The applicant will be expected to develop, select, and lead remote sensing research projects that apply their knowledge of IR sensing. The ability to improve the processing and analysis of IR remote sensing data through custom coding and analysis will be important. Examples of current research areas include wildland and prescribed fire mapping and effects assessment, Great Lakes aquatic sensing, invasive species mapping, wetlands assessment, transportation infrastructure assessment, wildland fire danger and emissions mapping, cloud-based and distributed computing, user-friendly app development, improved geotemporal visualization of complex data and patterns, extending UAV-enabling sensing, and Arctic landscape change. Director of Housing Auxiliary Operations and Residence Education Main Campus (Houghton, MI)
The Director of Housing Auxiliary Operations and Residence Education is a member of both the Student Affairs Leadership Team and Associate Vice President for Administration Team. Primary responsibilities include coordination, direction and oversight of residential education, student housing operations and services. The Director has oversight of, summer camps/conferences, as well as marketing efforts and technology initiatives related to Housing and Residential Education. Assistant, Associate, or Senior Research Scientist/Engineer Main Campus (Houghton, MI)
The Great Lakes Research Center (GLRC) at Michigan Technological University (Michigan Tech) aims to advance freshwater and coastal ocean research as a foundation for health, economic prosperity and global sustainability through interdisciplinary research cutting across Michigan Tech’s academic organizations. The GLRC institute includes collaborative faculty from eleven disciplines within the College of Engineering, College of Sciences and Arts, School of Business & Economics, and School of Forest Resources and Environmental Sciences. The GLRC seeks to hire outstanding scientific or engineering research scientists to collaboratively develop their research portfolios in all areas of freshwater and coastal ocean research with emphasis on three research focus areas: (1) Underwater sensing, modeling, and signal processing (including, but not limited to, underwater acoustics, data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and data fusion); (2) Arctic processes and sea ice dynamics (observation, modeling, and forecasting); and (3) Marine Technology and Engineering (emphasizing maritime autonomous vehicles, sensors, decision making, and policy). Successful candidates will also show evidence of a commitment to public outreach and the translation of research into impactful change. Ideal candidates will have a strong background in ocean or freshwater science and/or engineering applied to the marine environment and demonstrated involvement in interdisciplinary research with evidence of direct success in developing proposals to state, federal and other agencies resulting in a funded research portfolio. In addition, candidates should bring interesting innovative ideas to build additional collaborations across academic disciplines and provide expertise that bridges existing competencies to positively impact the success of others on campus.
Director, Van Pelt and Opie Library Main Campus (Houghton, MI)
Reporting to the Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs, the Director of the Van Pelt and Opie Library collaborates with colleagues throughout the library and across the University to set priorities, assess strengths, identify challenges and opportunities, and develop educational and service strategies consonant with the University’s strategic plan. The director is responsible for identifying and enhancing partnerships with the many learning communities throughout the University to advance the University’s teaching and research mission. Overseeing communication strategies, the director broadcasts their vision to the library’s constituencies and effectively manages the financial resources of the library. Further, the director plays a leading role in developing fruitful donor relationships, identifying and cultivating external funding sources, and advocating for library needs. In addition to the above-mentioned duties, the successful director develops and coordinates policy direction for the library’s diverse collections in all formats, including but not limited to the main collection, e-resources, and archives and special collections. In concert with team leaders in relevant areas, the director works collaboratively to advance strategies that enhance support for teaching, research, publishing, and learning.
