Job Description Summary

The Assistant Merchandising Manager assists with directing all aspects of the merchandising operations including its activities and the relationships between the University, customers, employees, community, and industry. Coordinates and administers policies and provides supervision and support to all department heads. Monitors the quality of products and services to maximize customer satisfaction. Secures and protects facility assets.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

• Assist with planning, implementing, supervising, and evaluating merchandising operations and procedures.
• Exercise supervisory authority over staff members as well as student employees. Plan and conduct training programs and staff meetings. Confer with staff to plan and coordinate activities, assign and review work, assist with difficult or unusual tasks, and resolve problems. Plan/oversee staffing needs and work schedules.
• Plan, implement, and administer the University Images Operations budgets and Open-To-Buy inventory plan in a fiscally responsible manner.
• Oversee and perform various bookkeeping/accounting tasks such as reconciling daily sales reports, receiving, invoicing and transferring merchandise.
• Plan, purchase, monitor and maintain appropriate selection and quantities of apparel and souvenir merchandise for University Images, the Campus Bookstore and online sales.
• Review financial statements, sales or activity reports, or other performance data to measure productivity, goal achievement, and/or to identify areas needing cost reduction or program improvement.
• Set prices and credit terms for goods and services based on forecasts of customer demand.
• Sustain and enhance efforts to recruit, train, and evaluate a talented and diverse staff.
• Oversee and/or carry out duties required to operate the online catalog and mail order division of University Images including all facets of order fulfillment, returns and exchanges.
• Assist with development and implementation of product-marketing strategies, including advertising campaigns and sales promotions.
• Plan and conduct store inventory.
• Assist other university departments with special orders and staff apparel.
• Maintain a clean, attractive and professional store appearance.
• Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.
• Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.
• Other duties as assigned.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

Earned bachelor’s degree in merchandising, business or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

Demonstrated three (3) years retail and customer service experience in a higher education retail outlet
Demonstrated three (3) years inventory management experience to include purchasing orders, invoicing, and receiving
Demonstrated three (3) years supervisory or management level experience in a higher education retail outlet
Proven excellent customer service experience
Proven excellent time management and organization skills

Desirable Education and/or Experience

Strong analytical skills and financial judgment
Experience working with spreadsheets & databases
Experience using WinPrism point-of-sale and inventory control software

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

Excellent interpersonal, customer service, and written/oral communication skills
Demonstrated ability to work independently

Demonstrated knowledge of and adherence to all applicable OSHA standards.
Understanding of LEAN practices and continuous improvement
