Summary

The Graduate Academic Coordinator plays a pivotal role in empowering graduate and postdoctoral scholars at Michigan Tech by leading, developing, and assessing comprehensive writing support programs. Writing support includes fellowships, research proposals, journal articles, dissertations, theses and reports. Support is provided via individualized assistance and the promotion of programs such as Write-D. This support will enhance the scholar experience, improve success in securing external funding, and facilitate timely degree completion. Additionally, the Coordinator will contribute to the efficient operation of the Graduate School by overseeing administrative processes related to graduate faculty records and the comprehensive dissertation submission and publishing workflow.

Responsibilities and Essential Duties

● Support graduate students and postdocs as they plan and write research fellowship applications and external grant proposals by providing writing consultations and advising them on coherency, style, organization, and formatting.
● Coordinate the Graduate School’s Writing in the Discipline (Write-D) program, which includes hiring, training, and supervising the Write-D Facilitators and coordinating with departmental stakeholders.
● Manage all aspects of dissertation, thesis, and report submission and publishing workflow.
● Promote graduate student scholarship by identifying and recruiting students to apply for regional and national awards.
● Supervise and hire student workers who assist in Graduate School processes related to degree completion.
● Maintain and update graduate faculty records, including overseeing the annual review process.
● Lead the selection committee for the graduate student commencement speaker and assist the speaker with preparing for their address.
● Manage and conduct Online English Language Assessments for visiting scholar and exchange student J-1 Visas.
● Advise the Graduate School on proof of English language proficiency policies, including assessment methods, score requirements for admission, and exempt countries.
● Participate in the development of new processes to streamline Graduate School procedures in collaboration with EAS and others.
● Other duties as assigned.

 

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent

Required Experience

● Two years of professional or academic writing experience.
● Excellent communication, writing, presentation and editing skills.
● Experience teaching or coaching communication skills or other skills relevant to the position.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

● Master's degree in a communications or STEM field.
● Experience in scholarly writing such as proposals, grants, conference abstracts, journal articles, dissertations, theses, or reports.
● Experience in program development and assessment.
● Experience using a database (such as Banner) to update records.
● Experience using a query tool (such as WebFocus) to gather and analyze data.
● Experience working with graduate students.
● Experience working with people from multiple countries and cultures.
● Familiarity with current research in rhetoric, composition, or writing center studies

● Demonstrated ability to maintain composure during stressful situations.
● Demonstrated commitment to contribute to a safe work environment.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

● Working knowledge and demonstrated ability to interpret institutional policies and procedures.
● Familiarity with the conventions of scholarly communications at the graduate level.
● Experience managing undergraduate and/or graduate students.
● Familiarity with high-stakes language assessments for university students.
● Working knowledge of FERPA.
● Advanced knowledge of excel including the ability to sort, filter, and analyze data.
● Ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff.

Required Training and Other Conditions of Employment

Every employee at Michigan Technological University will receive the following training courses:

Additional training will be required by the department on a periodic basis.

The minimum salary for this position is $54,000. The final salary will depend on experience and qualifications.
