Job Description Summary

The College of Forest Resources and Environmental Science at Michigan Technological University invites applications for the position of Assistant Teaching Professor in GIS and Remote Sensing. This is a nine-month, non-tenure-track, renewable position at MTU.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

Teaching responsibilities will include five to six synchronous or asynchronous on line and in-person courses per year with some of them being at the graduate level. The courses will be determined based on the needs of the College but will include courses in remote sensing of the environment and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

Development of GIS Certificates as part of a soon to be offered Masters in GIS through the MTU Global Campus. This work will take place during the spring and summer 2023 and beyond.

Oversee the roll out and teaching of the first GIS Certificate in Fall 2023 and the continuing development of certificates 2 and 3.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

Ph.D. in remote sensing of the Environment or a closely related discipline at the time of appointment.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

Experience with online and in-person synchronous/asynchronous teaching of natural resources (undergraduate/or graduate level) as lead instructor.

Proficiency with ARCGIS Pro, ERDAS Imagine, QGIS, or similar GIS/remote sensing software for analysis of natural resource datasets.

Extensive background using learning management systems, such as Canvas.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

Interest and experience in delivering classes in the area of remote sensing and GIS, and interest and experience in delivering such classes online.

Experience with GIS research including generating external funds to support research activities.  

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

Demonstrated ability to teach effectively at the undergraduate/graduate level in the disciplinary area.  

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

Background with use of machine/deep learning, R, Python with natural resource data sets.  

History with UAS system operation and data processing.

Language, Mathematics and/or Reasoning Skills
