Job Description Summary

The Department of Engineering Fundamentals at Michigan Technological University houses the Bachelor of Science in Engineering program, teaches common first year engineering courses, and supports engineering education research. We approach teaching in cutting edge ways, using a flipped format with an active and collaborative learning environment and supported by trained near-peer mentor assistants. We are seeking an assistant teaching professor ready to grow their career; Applicants with the required education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and accomplishments conducive to a higher rank will also be considered for an appointment at the rank of associate or full teaching professor or professor of practice. Applications are due January 2nd with the anticipated start date of August 21, 2023. Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

Anticipated teaching needs include first-year engineering classes, with opportunities to teach other advanced courses in general, and systems engineering. Typical first-year topics include engineering problem solving, engineering design, computer programming, and solid modeling. First-year courses are taught in a flipped class format emphasizing active and collaborative learning. Although the primary duty will be teaching, there is an expectation of collaboration on STEM education research and service. Employees are expected to apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work and commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

Master's degree in engineering, STEM Education, or a related field. Applicants with comparable credentials are also encouraged to apply. 

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

  •  

Desirable Education and/or Experience

• Ph.D.in engineering, STEM education, or a related field.
• Previous teaching or curricular experience with first-year engineering students
• Previous experience with Maker Spaces and/or student labs
• Terminal degree in engineering, a related STEM field, or STEM education
• Research in engineering education
• PE License and/or PMP Certification

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

• Strong interpersonal skills
• Demonstrated ability to work with diverse student, faculty, and community populations
• Demonstrated teaching ability
• Demonstrated ability to work on teams

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

• Practice or interest in active, collaborative, and flipped class learning methods
• Advanced computer skills, (MATLAB or other programming languages)
• Experience with modern design approaches (i.e. Design Thinking, Human Centered Design)
• Experience with Problem Based Learning
• Experience with simple robotics and/or Arduinos projects
• Experience with engineering CAD software

Language, Mathematics and/or Reasoning Skills

 

Work Environment and/or Physical Demands

The work environment is that of a typical office and/or classroom setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.

Required Training and Other Conditions of Employment
