Job Description Summary

This position serves as an advocate and technical resource for Michigan’s local (city, village, county) transportation agencies. The position will provide engineering technical support for activities underway at the Center for Technology & Training, which includes work with the Michigan Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP), the Great Lakes Environmental Infrastructure Center (GLEIC), the Bridge Load Rating Program, the Roadsoft asset management software package, and other research projects. The position requires a strong background in civil engineering (roads and bridges) as well as knowledge of the relationship between Michigan’s road owning agencies at a state and local level.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

1. Organize, coordinate, facilitate and/or lead continuing education and outreach webinars, workshops, conferences, and other training events at a variety of locations throughout Michigan
2. Create, design, and present transportation related training materials at webinars, workshops, and conferences throughout Michigan and nationally
3. Participate in research related activities awarded to the Center for Technology & Training (CTT) in conjunction with other staff and faculty, including proposal writing, conducting research, planning and management of research projects, report preparation, and presentation of findings on an as-needed basis
4. Provide engineering technical assistance to Michigan’s local agencies on transportation related issues on an as needed basis
5. Provide technical expertise for engineering related software development projects
6. Deliver program-related presentations to clients and related professional organizations
7. Participate on committees, councils, and task forces of related public and private entities
8. Functional supervision may be exercised over support staff and student assistants

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

• Bachelor’s degree from ABET accredited college in civil engineering with strong background in transportation (construction, geotechnical, structural, pavements, or transportation)
• Michigan Professional Engineer License or ability to secure one through reciprocity

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

• A minimum of three years of experience in design, construction, or planning of transportation projects
• Professional experience using Microsoft Office products

Desirable Education and/or Experience

• Advanced degree
• Experience developing and presenting training material for adult audiences as a subject matter expert
• Experience in writing proposals and/or technical research reports
• Experience in project management
• Experience with projects at the county, city, or state level

• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff

Additional Information

The Center for Technology & Training (CTT) provides technology transfer, software development and research services to support agencies that manage public infrastructure. With annual funding from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and Michigan Technological University (MTU), the CTT administers Michigan’s Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) and manages the development and support for roadway asset management, project estimating, and project management.
