Job Description Summary

Michigan Technological University, Department of Chemical Engineering invites applications for the position of non-tenure track lecturer/ professor of practice position. Applicants for the position are required to have an MS degree with significant industrial experience and/or a PhD in chemical engineering or closely related discipline. Michigan Tech attracts world-class faculty who enrich the educational experience of smart, motivated, and adventurous students. The Department of Chemical Engineering currently has 15 faculty members, 450 undergraduate students, and 35 graduate students. Externally-funded research has more than doubled in the past four years, and the Department is on a trajectory to double its graduate enrollment over the next five years. In March 2018, the undergraduate program was ranked 9th in the nation by College Factual, making it the highest-ranked such program in the State of Michigan. The Department's Unit Operations Laboratory is one of the best in the nation, with two pilot-plant set-ups, numerous bench scale processes, and a state-of-the-art process simulation and control facility. Our graduates are recognized for excellence and leadership and are highly sought by industry because of our emphasis on hands-on training and rigorous coursework.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

Teaching core chemical engineering undergraduate courses (traditional lecture/design courses as well as laboratory courses).

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

An MS degree with significant industrial experience and/or a PhD in chemical engineering or closely related discipline is required.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

For those with an MS in chemical engineering as their terminal degree, a minimum of ten years industrial experience required. For those with a PhD degree, there is no minimum industrial experience requirement.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

Prior experience as a teaching assistant, instructor, and/or as a process/project engineer is desired.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

Familiarity with using computational software to solve chemical engineering problems.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

Good communication skills, a passion to work with students, having an empathy and ability to engage with students with diverse learning styles, hands-on learning tools, active learning.

Language, Mathematics and/or Reasoning Skills


Work Environment and/or Physical Demands

The work environment is that of a typical office and/or classroom setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.

Required Training and Other Conditions of Employment
