Job Description Summary

The Research Scientist I – Scientific Software Developer will work as a software developer in support of multiple projects for our government and commercial customers. They will work with senior engineers and scientists to research, develop, and evaluate algorithms for a variety of signal and image processing, remote sensing, and geospatial applications. The position is based at MTRI in Ann Arbor, MI (www.mtri.org).

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

1. Assist with the dissemination of scientific results to external parties via the development of web based and mobile application software.
2. Provide technical, analytical and numerical support for research and development projects in the areas of mathematics, statistics, signal processing, remote sensing, and other science disciplines.
3. Design and develop software user interfaces by setting feature priorities throughout the development lifecycle; design methodologies and tool sets; design and conduct tests.
4. Support data management for remote sensing projects through the design and maintenance of scientific databases.
5. Develop software to prototype and evaluate signal processing, remote sensing, and/or machine learning algorithms.
6. Assist with defining software objectives by analyzing user requirements, system features, and functionality.
7. Recommend software solutions by comparing pros and cons of custom versus off-the-shelf alternatives.
8. Coordinate requirements and schedules, contribute to team meetings, troubleshoot development and production problems.
9. Develop software documentation and assistance tools.
10. Continue to improve performance by being aware of new technologies and software products, participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, and participating in professional organizations.
11. Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.
12. Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

Bachelor’s degree or higher in computer science with advanced coursework or 2 years professional experience in at least one of the following: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Ecology, Geology, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, Remote Sensing
OR
Bachelor’s degree or higher in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Ecology, Geology, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, or Remote Sensing with at least 2 years of computer science experience either post-degree or as part of a degree program.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

• Strong programming skills with experience in one or more of the following programming languages/software: C, C++, Python, Java, MATLAB, or equivalent.
• Knowledge of software development tools, including revision control systems.
• Demonstrated organizational ability and attention to detail.
• Demonstrated ability to participate in team projects.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

• Experience with one or more of the following: database design and maintenance, web development frameworks, iOS or Android development kits, scientific programming libraries.
• Basic knowledge of one or more of the following: signal processing, image processing, machine learning, numerical analysis, statistics, robotics, or distributed computing.
• Experience working with multidisciplinary teams to perform research, solve technical problems, and/or develop software tools.
• Familiarity with Linux or other Unix-based operating system.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

• Ability to obtain a U.S. Department of Defense security clearance, which requires United States citizenship with no dual citizenship status.
• Excellent written/oral communication skills.
• Demonstrated organizational ability and attention to detail.
• Ability to take direction, but work without continuous oversight.
• Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment with respect to significant matters related to job duties.
• Demonstrated ability to participate in team projects.
• Demonstrated commitment to contribute to a safe work environment.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

• Ability to contribute to competitive grant proposals.
• Ability to clearly communicate complex ideas through symposia, methods documentation, reports, and publications.
