Job Description Summary

Michigan Technological University invites applications for multiple tenure-track faculty positions in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the assistant professor level. Exceptionally qualified candidates will be considered for appointment at an associate or full professor rank and considered for an open endowed chair position in the department.

Applicants for the position are required to have a Ph.D. in chemical engineering or a closely related discipline.

All areas of chemical and biomolecular/bioprocess engineering are of interest. We are looking for faculty candidates with demonstrated capabilities in research, teaching expertise in core chemical engineering topics, and a strong commitment to mentoring and working with students.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

● Teach undergraduate and graduate level courses (core courses including mass and energy balances, thermodynamics, kinetics, transport, and/or process control).
● Mentor diverse students at all levels (UG through PhD).
● Develop a self-sustaining, externally funded, nationally recognized research program.
● Foster and contribute to a collaborative culture.
● Engage in professional service activities within the department, university, community, and professional organizations.
● Communicate (written, oral) with internal audiences (students, peers, researchers, supervisors, etc.) and external audiences (funding agencies, societies, journals, etc.).
● Tenure track faculty typically allocate their time as follows: 40% research, 40% teaching, and 20% service.
● Integrate safety practices into daily activities and apply continuous improvement strategies to everyday work.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

A Ph.D. in chemical engineering or a closely related discipline (by start date) and experiences that provide expertise to teach core chemical engineering courses.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

● Demonstrated mentorship of students (at any level) in research.

Associate or Full:
● Demonstrated mentorship and advising of graduate students toward degree completion.
● Experience managing a funded research project.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

● A degree in chemical engineering at any degree level.
● Demonstrated success in, or potential future contributions to, working with persons from diverse backgrounds, creating a sense of belonging, and fostering a fair, objective, welcoming place to work for persons with a wide variety of personal characteristics and viewpoints.
● Experience teaching core chemical engineering courses or labs (as specified by AIChE and ABET).

Associate or Full:
● Ability to lead a team of researchers to develop large-scale proposals and to establish a center of excellence.

● Technical communication skills (oral and written).
● Experience assisting or supporting teaching at the college level.
● Knowledge of inclusive teaching and mentoring methods.
● Potential to guide students efficiently and effectively to degree completion.
● Potential to launch a new research group and progressively secure resources to support students and generate new knowledge.

Associate or Full:
● Demonstrated ability to secure external research funding and disseminate findings with mentored students in relevant venues.
● Demonstrated ability to effectively teach and inclusively mentor students of all identities.
● Demonstrated ability to build and sustain a national reputation in a research field.

● Passion for teaching and continuous improvement of instructional content.

Work Environment and/or Physical Demands

The work environment is that of a typical office, classroom, and/or research/instructional laboratory setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.

Additional Information

The Department of Chemical Engineering currently has 18 (10 tenure-track, 3 instructional track, and 5 other rank) faculty members, ~400 undergraduate students, and 32 graduate students. Externally-funded research has more than doubled in the past five years, and the Department is on a trajectory to double its graduate enrollment over the next five years. The Department's Unit Operations Laboratory is one of the best in the nation, with two pilot plants, numerous bench-scale processes, and a state-of-the-art process operation and control facility.
