Job Description Summary

Laboratory Operations Supervisor, MMET Department will perform processing and scheduling; equipment operation; shop safety; work quality; hiring, training, supervising and scheduling staff; assisting clients with proposal preparation; and negotiating with vendors and corporations for equipment purchases and trades.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

1. Supervises, schedules, prioritizes and assigns work of the MMET machine shop support staff. Provide instruction and training to staff in machine shop practice and operation, including safety orientation and documentation. Interviews, hires, trains, evaluates, and disciplines regular and student employees. Resolves employee complaints and grievances.
2. Negotiates with vendors, businesses, clients, customers, and University departments for equipment purchases and trades. Oversees the inventory of supplies to ensure effective operations.
3. Assists in developing and implementing policies and procedures. Oversee operations in order to maintain quality control and meet deadlines by checking records of expenses incurred for individual projects.
4. Serves as safety liaison with the University Safety Office. Maintain and enforce health and safety standards in order to ensure compliance with University, State and Federal rules and regulations.
5. Communicate with the Facilities Department for general laboratory maintenance needs.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

Associate's degree in machining/CNC operations, mechanical, manufacturing, or a closely-related technology field from an accredited institution.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

1. Minimum 6 years of experience in an academic institution as a machinist, and minimum of ten years industrial experience in a machine shop as a machinist, welding and mechanical fabrication.
2. Extensive experience using CAD/CAM/CNC.
3. Experience operating and maintaining machine shop equipment and software.
4. Experience using measurement and metrology equipment for inspection and quality control.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

Ten years or more of relevant industrial experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

1. Demonstrated ability to interpret geometric dimensioning and tolerance notations on parts.
2. Demonstrated knowledge of current laboratory safety and OSHA standards.
3. Use of personal computers and basic software programs.
4. Evidence of strong oral and written communication, computer, and CAD skills;
5. Motivation to develop partnerships with industry.
6. The successful applicants will demonstrate appropriate technical expertise in organizational planning, including facility layout, operating procedures, training and safety procedures, new equipment research and facilities upgrades.

7. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff.

Work Environment and/or Physical Demands

The work environment is that of a typical office and/or classroom setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.

Required Training and Other Conditions of Employment

Every employee at Michigan Technological University will receive the following 4 required trainings; additional training may be required by the department.
