Job Description Summary

Plan and perform a variety of skilled work in the maintenance and repair of University-owned equipment and motor vehicles including, but not limited to heavy equipment; service vehicles; maintenance equipment; and, back-up generators; and assist and work with Grounds and Trades personnel on a wide variety of projects.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

1. Perform diagnosis, maintenance, repair, and adjustment on heavy equipment including, but not limited to the following:
• Wheel Loader
• Backhoe
• Motor Grader
• Klauer SnoGo®
• All-terrain Fork-Lift
• Elgin Street Sweeper
2. Perform diagnosis, maintenance, repair, and adjustment on diesel trucks and watercraft including, but not limited to the following:
• Box Truck
• Sewer Jetter Truck
• Bucket Truck
• Tandem-Axle Dump Truck
• Research Vessel Agassiz
3. Perform diagnosis, maintenance, repair, and adjustment on gas and diesel equipment including, but not limited to the following:
• Riding Lawn Mower
• Farm Tractor
• Turf Sweeper
• Pick-up Trucks
• Leaf Vacuum
• Plow Assemblies
• Utility Work Machines
• Tenant Sweeper
• Trencher
4. Perform diagnosis, maintenance, repair, and adjustment on hand-held tools and equipment including, but not limited to the following:
• Lift Gates
• Weed Trimmer
• Leaf Blower
• Air Compressor
• Power Broom
• Chain Saw
• Masonry Saw
• Snow Blower
5. Perform routine maintenance, repair, and adjustment on a variety of light duty and heavy equipment including, but not limited to fluid levels, hoses, belts, brakes, tires, and clutches; changes filters and oil, and lubricate.
6. Diagnose problems, disassemble system components, repair and/or replace parts, and reassemble system components in the following systems:
Brake System: Repair or replace shoes, pads, drums, hoses, calipers, and cylinders.
Cooling System: Flush radiator, replace hoses and thermostat, repair or replace radiator and water pump.
Drive System: Repair and replace drive shaft, differential, axle, transmission, and clutch.
Electrical System: Repair or replace fuses, batteries, lights, instruments, warning devices, controls and switches, computer controls, modules, alternators, starters, and defective cables and wiring.
Exhaust and Emissions Control System: Replace mufflers, manifolds, catalytic converters, and pipes.
Heating and Air Conditioning System: Repair or replace heater cores, condensers, compressors, hoses, and controls; recharge air conditioning systems.
Hydraulic and Air Systems: Repair or replace hoses, valves, cylinders, compressors, and pumps.
Steering and Suspension System: Repairs rack and pinion steering systems. Align and balance wheels, repair or replace tie rods, ball joints, gear boxes, shock absorbers, springs, steering linkage, kingpins, power steering, hoses, and pumps.
7. Fabricate, modify, and install special equipment or replacement parts.
8. Bump out and repair or replace parts of damaged equipment and truck bodies.
9. Perform maintenance and steam-cleaning and painting; apply protective coatings and materials on equipment as required.
10. Maintain service logs and records of maintenance on vehicles and heavy equipment.
11. Keeps tools, equipment, and work area clean, organized, and in good working condition.
12. Operate basic metalworking equipment and perform welding as required.
13. Provide instruction and training in vehicle and equipment maintenance and the proper methods and processes necessary to perform the work. May assist in training Operators and Groundspersons in proper maintenance techniques.
14. Operate vehicles and heavy equipment as assigned.
15. Prepares work order and estimates of cost and materials.
16. Maintain inventory and order, parts, tools, equipment, and supplies.
17. Perform layout work for fabrication of parts and equipment.
18. Be able to work from general assignment and proceed with minimum supervision or direction from others.
19. Read and work from blueprints, sketches, and schematic drawings.
20. Maintain a broad knowledge of applied trade practices, techniques, and applicable rules and codes.
21. Assist Trades personnel with maintenance of various types of equipment and building facilities and infrastructure as necessitated by daily operations.
22. Be responsible for housekeeping, sanitation, and safety in assigned Grounds break, storage, shop, and work areas.
23. Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.
24. Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

• High School diploma, trades school training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.
• Must possess appropriate valid driver's license(s)
• Must possess a valid certificate or demonstrate the ability to obtain a certificate issued by the Michigan Department of State within 120 calendar days of hire for the following:
Heavy-Duty Truck repair categories for vehicles over 10,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) including:
1. Engine Repair - Gasoline
2. Engine Repair - Diesel
3. Drive Train
4. Brakes & Braking Systems
5. Suspension & Steering Systems
6. Electrical System
• Must possess or demonstrate the ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with B endorsement and no restrictions within 120 calendar days of hire. Having or achieving this is a critical component to maintaining satisfactory performance during the probationary period.
• The employee is subject to federally mandated CDL drug and alcohol testing policies.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

• Five years’ experience within the last seven years in the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment including a sander truck with air breaks and an under blade, SnoGo®, motor grader, end loader, backhoe, or equivalent mobile heavy equipment.
• Five years current experience in the operation and maintenance of light and heavy equipment including pickup trucks with snow plows, dump trucks, farm tractors, wheel loaders, truck-mounted sanders, utility work machines/utility task vehicles, and equivalent mobile equipment.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

• State of Michigan Mechanic’s Certifications as follows:
Automobile and Light Truck repair categories for vehicles under 10,000 pounds GVW including:
1. Engine Repair
2. Engine Tune-up/Performance
3. Front End, Suspension & Steering Systems
4. Brakes & Braking Systems
5. Automatic Transmission
Automobile and Light Truck repair categories for vehicles under 10,000 pounds GVW include:
1. Manual Transmission
2. Electrical Systems
3. Heating & Air Conditioning
4. Collision-Related Mechanical Repair
5. Unitized Body Structural Repair
• Familiarity with the laws in the State of Michigan that regulate motor vehicle repair and maintenance including, but not limited to Chapter II of the Michigan Vehicle Code, the Motor Vehicle Service and Repair Act and the Administrative Rules.
• Possession of a certification in First-Aid and Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
• Possession of Level One or Level Two Certifications from the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) in General Safety and Health, Safety and Health Management Systems, and Occupational Health.
• Maintain a broad knowledge of applied trade practices, techniques, and applicable rules and codes.
• Familiarity with maintenance management software and electronic work request ticketing system.
• Familiarity with the operation of computers, portable electronic devices, and their related applications including login procedures, electronic mail, and text messages.
• Prior safety training in any of the following:

• Knowledge of the standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of motor vehicles and engines.
• Knowledge of body and frame construction.
• Skills in the use of a variety of hand tools.
• Skills in the use of gas and electric welding equipment.
• Skills in the use of mechanized tools, jacks, and hoists.
• Skills in the use of a variety of automotive diagnostic testing and tuning equipment. Ability to diagnose mechanical and automotive malfunctions.
• Ability to read mechanical and automotive blueprints, diagrams, and manuals. Ability to disassemble, repair, and assemble engines and parts.
• Knowledge of safety issues in the use of tools, equipment, and supplies used in repair of motorized vehicles and equipment.
• Ability to communicate with vehicle and equipment users, vendors, and other mechanics about repair work needed.
• Demonstrated ability to adapt to frequently changing work environments, conditions and work schedules.
• Ability to work from general assignment and proceed with minimum supervision or direction from others.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

• Demonstrated ability to safely operate power hand tools and motorized equipment including chain saws, lawn sweepers, mowers, shears, top dressers, paint sprayers, and other related grounds care equipment.
• Ability to perform tasks involving climbing, lifting, handling of materials and supplies, moving furniture and equipment and working from ladders, scaffolds and a bucket truck.
• Knowledge and ability related to the safe handling and application of seed, fertilizer, and soil amendments used in turf maintenance and weed/pest control.
• Proven understanding of safe operating and maintenance procedures.
• Be able to perform duties in confined space.
• Excellent work attendance record.
• Good physical condition to enable safe, efficient, and sanitary performance of work, with or without accommodation.

Language, Mathematics and/or Reasoning Skills

Language Skills:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to complete routine reports. Ability to effectively present information in one on one situations to customers or employees.

Mathematical Skills:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of problems in standardized situations. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret a variety of technical instructions in mathematical, diagram, written or oral form.
