Job Description Summary

Michigan Technological University has an opening for a communications director to provide the College of Sciences and Arts (CSA) and its eleven departments with web marketing project management, website maintenance, outreach, recruiting and marketing. The appropriate candidate will also consult with departmental web liaisons on web and document accessibility and updates to news blogs and event calendars.

The communications director will report to the Dean of the College of Sciences and Arts and will collaborate with University Marketing and Communications and web liaisons to improve and maintain the quality and usability of all College of Sciences and Arts websites to support recruitment and reputation initiatives. The director will work with the Dean and department chairs to support all aspects of the College’s marketing and communications.

College of Sciences and Arts web properties include 21 CMS websites, 1,500 CMS webpages, 19 news blogs, 35 customized WordPress sites, and dozens of events calendars. Each department provides at least one web liaison to collaborate with and the College employs one student web content specialist to assist with routine web maintenance projects.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

1. Work with departmental web liaisons to improve and maintain the content, user experience, and functionality of sites related to the College and its faculty to support recruitment and reputation initiatives.
2. Develop web pages that are attractive to target audiences, have logistical navigation flow, meet University and industry standards, and are accessible for all populations.
3. Use analytics to make and recommend changes to College websites, striving for continuous improvement in usability and search engine rankings.
4. Review College of Sciences and Arts’ web pages for consistency, accuracy, and compliance by maintaining and executing annual maintenance plans.
5. Repurpose and assist in creating a variety of source documents (PDFs, Word, or other formats) for the web.
6. Optimize images, fix errors, and update web content.
7. Train departmental web liaisons to work in OU Campus CMS, WordPress, and Localist; empower them to maintain their websites, news blogs, and events calendars; and maintain ongoing relationships and assist where needed.
8. Consult with departmental web liaisons on web usage, standards, and search engine optimization with help from University Marketing and Communications.
9. Identify, research and write news stories and articles for College websites, blogs, etc…
10. Support department staffs in creation of departmental newsletters and other communications.
11. Produce high-quality posters, flyers, banners, postcards, and other marketing or communications material for the College.
12. Complete special projects as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
Managerial supervision will be exercised over student staff members who assist with web maintenance.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

Bachelor’s degree in communications, web design, or comparable work experience

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

● Experience in using web content management systems (CMS)
● Experience in using WordPress
● Experience using various Adobe packages or similar software for managing print and/or web design. software

Desirable Education and/or Experience

● Experience in using and interpreting web standards (browsers, accessibility, validity)
● Experience using OU Campus CMS
● Experience with Localist event management system
● Experience working in a University setting
● Proficiency on both the Macintosh and PC platforms
● Demonstrated working knowledge of HTML and CSS
● Experience in creating print marketing assets

Work Environment and/or Physical Demands

● The work environment is that of a typical office and/or classroom setting.
● Walking to and from client meetings is necessary
● The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
