Job Description Summary

The Department of Biological Sciences at Michigan Technological University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Human Biology. We are seeking a colleague who will develop a productive independent research program and build collaborations within the departmental strengths in human health, biochemistry and molecular biology, and/or ecology to answer fundamental questions in biology.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

Establish a competitive externally-funded human health research program that supports our educational mission.

Teach undergraduate and graduate courses related to human biology, and actively contribute to graduate education in their area of expertise.

Provide leadership to and participate in our new B.S. in Human Biology degree program.

Offer service to their community of peers and the university.

Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.

Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

Ph.D. in Human Biology, Human Physiology, Integrative Biology, or related field.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

Experience and a strong interest in teaching college or university students, post-doctoral research experience, demonstrated ability and interest in collaborative research with proven
record of publication in scientific journals.

Desirable Education and/or Experience


Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

Knowledge of Human Biology and possession of scholarly research record evidenced by extramural funding and publications in international journals.

Example areas of focus include, but are not limited to, human physiology, pathophysiology, comparative physiology, behavioral physiology, physiological toxicology, epidemiology, metabolic syndrome, or other related fields.

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff.

Multi-disciplinary research partnerships are encouraged at Michigan Tech and therefore the ability and interest in collaborating with faculty within and outside the the department is strongly encouraged. The university has 18 active research centers and institutes (, which provide interdisciplinary opportunities and resources for faculty, staff, and students.

The Department of Biological Sciences currently consists of 16 full-time faculty members, 5 full-time staff, and several research faculty members. The department offers six undergraduate degrees as well as an MS and Ph.D. in Biological Sciences and a Ph.D. in the interdisciplinary program in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. The department currently has an enrollment of 231 undergraduate and 43 graduate students, approximately half of whom are Ph.D. candidates.
