Summary

The Director of Internal Audit provides independent assurance and expert advisory services to university leadership and the governing board. This role is responsible for directing all institutional audit functions, assessing governance, risk, and control processes, and guiding the university in meeting its objectives and upholding the highest standards of integrity.

Responsibilities and Essential Duties

• Serves as a strategic advisor and internal consultant to university leadership and departments by proactively identifying risks, evaluating the effectiveness of internal controls, and recommending improvements to enhance university operations and achieve institutional objectives.
• Develops and executes a comprehensive, risk-based annual audit plan that includes assurance audits, consulting services, investigative engagements, and follow-up on prior recommendations. Manages the allocation of staff and resources to ensure timely completion of the plan.
• Leads the planning, execution, and reporting of a wide range of audits (e.g., financial, compliance, operational, information technology, and special projects), and communicates audit results, recommendations, and follow-up status to university executive leadership and the Audit Committee of the Board of Trustees.
• Coordinates and serves as a liaison for internal audit activities with external auditors, federal and state agencies, and other third-party reviewers.
• Manages the university’s anonymous reporting tool and collaborates with General Counsel to ensure timely and appropriate responses to all reported complaints.
• Provides comprehensive leadership and supervision for the internal audit team, including hiring, training, and performance management. Fosters a culture of continuous learning, professional development, and high performance within the department.
• Upholds and promotes the highest standards of integrity and ethical conduct within the department and across the university.
• Stays current with professional standards (e.g., IIA), regulatory changes, and emerging risks and trends in higher education, and guides the university in adapting to these changes

 

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures

Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, or a related field, or a minimum of 10 years of equivalent work experience

Required Experience

5 years of experience in internal audit or a related field

Desirable Education and/or Experience

• Experience in public accounting or internal auditing
• Certified Public Accountant and/or Certified Internal Auditor
• Supervisory experience
• Experience working in a higher education environment or providing audit or related services in a higher education environment

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

• Deep knowledge of auditing standards (i.e. IIA) and strong knowledge of internal control frameworks and other applicable standards, laws, and regulations (e.g. COSO, GDPR, FERPA) with the ability to perform job duties in accordance with these accepted professional standards while providing value-added recommendations.
• Demonstrated analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills to identify complex issues, analyze data, and develop practical, risk-based solutions.
• Strong decision-making skills to exercise sound administrative judgment, assume responsibility for decisions, and manage the consequences and results impacting university operations, costs, and quality of service.
• Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral, with the ability to build effective relationships, influence stakeholders at all levels of the university, and present complex information clearly and persuasively.
• Proven ability to write clear, concise, and persuasive reports detailing findings and recommendations.
• Proven ability to lead and mentor team members, including setting clear expectations, coordinating assignments, monitoring productivity, and ensuring high-quality output. Able to serve as a technical resource and contribute to the professional development of others.

Documented evidence of lead authorship of academic or governmental audits

Work Environment and/or Physical Demands

• Sedentary work. Works primarily in an office setting
• Collaborative and independent work. The role requires a balance of working independently and as part of a team.
• Occasional need to independently visit local and remote campus facilities, including some laboratory environments, outdoor areas, varied research environments, performance hall, ski hill, golf course, and other university locations that may include loud noises, uneven terrain, odors, and the use of PPE.
• Light lifting. Occasionally lifting or carrying files, binders, laptops, or other work-related materials up to 15 pounds.
• Repetitive hand motions. Computer work requires repetitive hand and wrist motions associated with typing and using a mouse.
• Visual acuity. The ability to visually assess and review an area or university process.
