Summary

The Information Technology department of Michigan Technological University seeks a System Administrator II in our Core Services group works in a team of professional IT staff that is responsible for the effective provisioning, installation/configuration, operation and maintenance, security, and performance of a large number of Linux servers and systems related to campus authentication, email, Google Workspace, directory services, DNS, DHCP, application load balancing and web sites/applications.

Responsibilities and Essential Duties

● System Administration of core services to campus such as Google Workspace, authentication(CAS/SSO/LDAP), web hosting(cPanel/Apache), load balancing and the campus VPN services.
● Provide advanced technical skills to install, configure, secure and maintain a wide variety of Linux servers, applications and services.
● Plan ahead for necessary hardware or software improvements to support system growth.
● Work closely with others in IT to ensure effective data security, business continuity, and performance.
● Monitor event logs for changes or errors and take appropriate actions to resolve issues.
● Prepare oral and written status reports on assigned projects.
● Identify tasks which require automation and implement the required automation.
● Maintain up-to-date knowledge of advances in information technology systems.
● Organize and participate in providing on-call and emergency support for critical campus systems under your group's control.
● Collaborate with other Linux/Unix system administrators allowing for a consistent and cohesive environment.
● Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.
● Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.

 

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures

Bachelor’s degree in system administration or comparable technology related degree program; or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which required knowledge and abilities can be acquired.

Required Experience

At least 2 years experience in Linux and Unix OS administration, maintenance and support including installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and using Linux/Unix standard systems and software applications.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

  • Working knowledge of Oracle, MySQL, or MS SQL Database Systems.
    Familiarity with cloud services: Google Apps, AWS, Office365, Cloudflare.
  • Knowledge of common network concepts, protocols and tools.
  • Experience working with configuration management systems such as Puppet, Chef, Ansible, etc.
  • Experience with source code control and versioning systems such as Subversion, or git.
  • Experience and ability to work within formal change management systems.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

  • Proficiency installing, configuring and managing Apache and/or Nginx in a production Linux/Unix environment.
  • Proficiency installing, configuring and managing Postfix, Sendmail, DNS, DHCP, and/or other similar common Linux server applications.
  • Proficiency with Bash, Python, Perl, or similar scripting language. 
  • Demonstrated success in working with persons  with a wide variety of personal characteristics and viewpoints.
  • Demonstrated understanding of network design and concepts including firewalls, VLANS, subnetting, and routing.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to build solid working relationships with people of diverse personalities and professional backgrounds, with a strong focus on customer service.
  • Ability to carry cell phone, work outside regular business hours and be available on-site during an emergency.
  • Demonstrated commitment to contribute to a safe work environment.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

  • Knowledge of authentication, authorization and identity tools such as LDAP, Active Directory, CAS, and/or SAML.
  • Knowledge of application traffic management/load balancing.
  • Experience using customer issue tracking software.
  • The desire and ability to keep abreast of new technologies including desktop, laptop, and server hardware; Linux and Unix operating system and application software; and high performance computing related technologies.
  • Highly organized and able to adapt quickly to changing priorities.
  • Skill and ability to handle stressful situations and multiple deadlines in a calm, professional manner.

The anticipated salary for this position is between $60,000 - $90,000; however, the final salary will depend on experience and qualifications.
