Job Description Summary

Michigan Technological University and the Visual and Performing Arts department seek an Assistant Professor of Sound to teach in the BA Sound Design and BS Audio Production & Technology major programs and establish a professional record of research in sound. Candidates must be committed to fostering a collaborative and inclusive creative community that encourages diverse perspectives, risk taking and revision and is informed by an educational philosophy focused on student development.

The sound programs are supported through the integration of Music, Theatre, and Art in the department as well as collaboration with other units in the College of Sciences and Arts, College of Engineering, College of Forestry, and College of Computing. In addition to department-based production, the degree programs include integration with the University Enterprise Program where students work in multidisciplinary teams on real world projects.

This is one of two current searches in sound and we hope to hire individuals who bring complementary skills, viewpoints, and experiences. The successful candidate will have a strong mix of professional and teaching experience. This position requires a mix of classroom teaching and supervision of applied production work as well as research/creative activity in sound.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

Classroom teaching will include 2 classes per semester based on curricular needs and the specialty of the candidate. The position will be expected to develop 1-2 new courses in their area of specialty. In addition, practicum teaching will involve supervising student work in one or more areas, including live music reinforcement, streaming, and recording; sound design for theatre and themed entertainment; sound for picture; and studio recording based on the candidate’s expertise as well as other projects of interest to the candidate.

Continued artistic practice and/or research in the candidate's area(s) of specialization is expected to keep them current on trends and standards in their area of specialty.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

Terminal degree relevant to the teaching of sound, (e.g. MFA, DMA, Ph.D.).


Required Experience (minimum requirements)

Teaching experience.
Leadership experience on successful professional audio projects.
A background in multiple areas of sound practice.
Experience in narrative-based sound projects.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

Two years of teaching experience in sound related disciplines.
Three years of professional sound work.

Degree in Art, Film, Music, Theatre or related discipline.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

Demonstrated commitment and ability to foster an inclusive, supportive, and creative learning environment.
Demonstrated commitment to student-centered learning.
Proficiency with multiple Digital Audio Workstations, including Logic and Pro Tools.
Understanding of acoustics as it applies to successful recording, monitoring, and live sound.
Demonstration of a reflective creative process.
Demonstration of a reflective teaching process.
Strong written and oral communication skills.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

Music recording, theatre sound design, sound for picture, sound for video games, music composition, music producing, music business, broadcast sound, installations.

Language, Mathematics and/or Reasoning Skills


Work Environment and/or Physical Demands

The work environment is that of a typical office and/or classroom setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.

Required Training and Other Conditions of Employment
