Job Description Summary MTRI is seeking a highly motivated, intellectually curious professional to support multiple projects for our government and commercial clients. The Assistant Research Engineer - Support Technician will work with robotics and engineering professionals to support the building and evaluation of deployable hardware systems, such as robots, unmanned mobility systems (aerial, ground, and underwater), and mobile connectivity platforms. The successful candidate with have a strong background in electronics technology and the assembly of custom hardware solutions. The position is based at MTRI in Ann Arbor, MI (www.mtri.org). Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned) 1. Contribute to research programs by building and evaluating prototypes of deployable systems.2. Support lab functions including rework, inventory, and system test of hardware systems.3. Develop and execute test methods for electronics components and complete control systems.4. Recommend hardware solutions by comparing the pros and cons of custom versus off-the-shelf alternatives.5. Continue to improve performance by being aware of new technologies and software/hardware products and participating in educational opportunities.6. Flexibly work across multiple task areas.7. Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.8. Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives. Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements) Associate’s Degree in Electrical / Electronics Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology or related fieldOR 2 years relevant industry experience Required Experience (minimum requirements) • Knowledge of electronic components including circuit boards, power components, microprocessors, and/or sensors.• Experience in designing, building, and testing prototype electronics systems.• Familiarity with bench test equipment.• Experience with specification of components.• Experience troubleshooting complex electronic systems. Desirable Education and/or Experience • Experience with networking technologies such as Bluetooth and portable WiFi.• Experience with power system integration.• Experience working with a variety of systems from 0 to 48V (micro-controller to vehicle).• Experience with PCB manufacturing process.• Familiarity with Linux or other Unix-based operating system. Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements) • Ability to obtain a U.S. Department of Defense security clearance, which requires United States citizenship with no dual citizenship status.• Excellent written/oral communication skills.• Demonstrated organizational ability and attention to detail.• Ability to take direction, but work without continuous oversight.• Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment with respect to significant matters related to job duties.• Demonstrated ability to participate in team projects.• Demonstrated commitment to contribute to a safe work environment.
