Research Scientist I – Applied Mathematician/Statistician Michigan Tech Research Institute (Ann Arbor, MI)
MTRI (www.mtu.edu/mtri) is seeking highly motivated, intellectually curious, professional statisticians, mathematicians, and engineers interested in developing new tools and applications of statistical signal processing, sequential planning, and optimization. Specifically, this position involves supporting customer-driven research needs from both government and commercial sponsors. The role involves collaboration with senior engineers and scientists to research, design, and evaluate new cutting-edge tools for application to remote sensing. A successful candidate will have a solid background in pure and applied mathematics and/or statistics and a desire to apply theory from these fields to a broad range of remote sensing and sensor modalities. In addition, an ideal candidate would have prior experience writing scientific software to investigate the efficacy of the proposed techniques.

Campus Electrical Engineer Main Campus (Houghton, MI)
Overall administration of the campus electrical system, including high and low voltage. Ensure system compliance with NEC and other pertinent code requirements to provide a safe and dependable electrical system for the University. Work with in-house personnel and outside consultants as necessary to coordinate projects, changes, and expansion of the system. Design and manage small electrical projects or coordinate with outside consultants for larger projects to properly modify the existing system as required. Advise and make recommendations to the AVP Facilities Management, the Director of Planning & Construction, the Director of Energy Management, and other members of the University personnel on all aspects of electrical engineering, electrical construction, life safety, and code compliance in pursuit of University objectives.

The Center for Technology & Training is seeking a Business/Training Support Specialist to help elevate our trainings (transportation (roads and bridges) and environmental programs) and support our business activities. This position provides a self-motivated candidate with an opportunity to help develop new training materials and bring a fresh outlook to existing training materials. They provide support for events from start to finish – organizing events and working with both internal and external subject matter experts, processing registrations and payments, Zoom management, providing virtual and on-site event support, customer communications, and more. The person in this position supports initiatives related to the continued development and retention of students living in the residence halls at Michigan Technological University. For the 2024-2025 academic year, the person in this role will focus on preparing for the opening of a new 516 bed residence hall in Fall 2025. This is a 12-month position. A furnished apartment is provided on site, however staff can explore off campus housing and be successful in the position.
Research Engineer I - Civil Engineer Michigan Tech Research Institute (Ann Arbor, MI)
The Research Scientist I – Civil Engineer position provides leadership and support for MTRI programs focused on the development and application of civil engineering to remote sensing and geospatial analysis research projects to solve governmental and societal needs. Knowledge of CAD, digital twins, building information models, pavement condition assessment, traffic monitoring, programming, statistical analysis, asset management, and non-destructive evaluation (NDE) methods is required. The applicant will be expected to develop, support, select, apply for, and lead research projects that apply their knowledge of civil engineering to research questions. The ability to improve the processing and analysis of remote sensing and NDE data through custom coding and analysis for infrastructure condition assessment will be important. Examples of current research areas include paved and unpaved road condition assessment with drones, developing digital twins for bridges, improving hydrological modeling inputs, identifying road surface types using remote sensing data, modeling flooding and scour risks to railways and bridges, automating assessment of rail grade crossing safety, modeling risks to power plants, developing web-based decision support systems, and improving water quality at wastewater treatment lagoons. Postdoctoral Scholar, Atmospheric Physics Main Campus (Houghton, MI)
The postdoctoral researcher will work with the MTU cloud chamber group to conduct experiments in support of the design of a large convection cloud chamber for exploration of aerosol processing and drizzle formation. Special attention will be given to topics of large uncertainty, including boundary conditions for water vapor, removal rates for diffusive aerosol particles, and removal rates for inertial cloud droplets. The postdoc will collaborate on bringing CFD and measurements into close and rigorous agreement in order to increase the level of confidence in the design of the convection cloud chamber.

Prof. Lei Pan’s research team is looking for a motivated applicant with an analytical chemistry background. He/she will be operating various analytical equipment in a university analytical laboratory. He/she will also be working with research staff, graduate students, and undergraduate students to co-develop job safety assessment (JSAs), waste management plans (WMPs), and Spill Response Plans (SRPs), and receiving and shipping materials and chemicals.
