Job Description Summary

Michigan Technological University’s Office of the Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion (OVPDI) is seeking a culturally responsive director for the Center for Diversity and Inclusion (CDI) who has a demonstrated history of positive staff management and coordination along with proven success in the retention and graduation of underserved and underrepresented students. This highly visible position reports directly to the Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion and is responsible for directing, supervising, and coaching Center staff and, in collaboration with OVPDI leadership, setting the strategic vision and direction of the CDI.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

1. Lead and manage the day-to-day operations of the CDI such as developing optimal student centered services and activities, department policies and procedures, student tracking processes, and internal and external communication management.  
2. Supervise, evaluate, and provide professional development/coaching for full-time staff, staff assistants, and student employees.
3. Continually hone and focus the CDI vision and mission on best practices that will optimize retention and graduation outcomes for underserved and underrepresented students in consultation with OVPDI leadership and the CDI staff.
4. Build positive relationships with students, staff, student organizations, academic colleges, administrative units, external agencies, and other stakeholders to enhance the Center's visibility, reputation, and inter-department collaboration.
5. Assess and communicate Center activities, services, and outcomes to institutional administrators, including annual reports, grant reporting, and periodic updates.
6. Pursue opportunities to expand the program by writing grant proposals (e.g., TRIO).
7. Administer and manage department budgets in consultation with the OVPDI office.
8. Promote culturally/equity responsive initiatives among a wide range of populations within the University community to improve understanding of diversity.
9. Work a nontraditional schedule that at times may include some weekends due to the student-centered focus of the department.
10. Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.
11. Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.
12. Other duties as assigned.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

Master’s degree in higher education/student affairs administration, psychology, counselor education, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

● Five years of job-related experience with increasing responsibility, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Demonstrated successful experiences in:
● identifying, establishing, and evaluating program goals;
● developing successful retention/graduation initiatives, policies, and procedures;
● augmenting department visibility and maintaining a positive reputation among different subsets of the organization;
● fostering positive inter-department collaboration;
● community building among all organization stakeholders;
● assessing short- and long-term program outcomes;
● compiling reports on program activities and services;
● developing and administering departmental budgets;
● hiring, supervising, and evaluating department staff;
● inspiring leadership that leads to staff accomplishment;
● establishing and maintaining positive relationships with department staff and fostering a positive department culture;
● mentoring/coaching staff to develop skills that lead to increasing levels of responsibility.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

● Doctorate in higher education/student affairs administration, psychology, counselor education, or a related field.
● Experience with grant development, writing and reporting.
● Experience working with postsecondary students and coordinating student affairs related programs.
● Experience creating print and digital promotional materials.
Demonstrated successful experiences in:
● working with student tracking programs;
● assessment of student graduation outcomes in light of counseling and other program interventions.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

● Demonstrated exemplary written, verbal, and presentation skills, including proficiency with word processing and spreadsheet software, preferably Microsoft Office or Google Suite.
● Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse constituent groups (i.e. students, faculty, or staff).
● Demonstrated ability to use judgment when dealing with confidential information.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

● Creation and management of databases and websites
● Demonstrated ability to creatively plan, organize, and execute events.

Work Environment and/or Physical Demands

The work environment is that of a typical office and/or classroom setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate, but can occasionally be higher.

Required Training and Other Conditions of Employment

Every employee at Michigan Technological University will receive the following 4 required trainings; additional training may be required by the department.

The CDI provides individual holistic counseling and educational services for undergraduate and graduate students and collaborates with other departments on campus to assist students in meeting the challenges associated with attaining a degree at a major research institution.
