Job Description Summary

The Accountant performs professional accounting and administrative work including processing and approving financial transactions, preparing reconciliations, and ensuring compliance with financial policies and procedures.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

1. Independently perform accounting related activities for all Governmental-type funds of the University.
2. Perform month-end and fiscal year-end closing activities, including the preparation of work papers for the annual external audit.
3. Review and prepare monthly reconciliations of general ledger accounts such as cash accounts, investments and fixed assets.
4. Research and resolve reconciling items in a timely manner.
5. Assist campus constituents as needed with financial matters.
6. Approve financial transactions in workflow queues.
7. Maintain the Chart of Accounts, which includes the creation of new indexes, funds, organizations, rule classes and account codes.
8. Assist in the development and updating of financial and administrative operating policies.
9. Prepare regular and special reports and analysis for administrators as requested.
10. Review, monitor and maintain appropriate internal controls over financial transactions.
11. Monitor compliance of externally funded property and reporting requirements per federal regulations.
12. Supervise support staff.
13. Participate on University committees.
14. Participate in training/workshops for campus constituents.
15. Seek new ways to improve efficiency and commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to every-day work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.
16. Apply safety- related knowledge, skills and practices to everyday work.
17. Other duties as assigned.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Business, Finance and/or a related field from an accredited college or university.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

• Minimum of four (4) years of progressive, relevant work experience in accounting and/or finance operations that can be demonstrated to be applicable to the duties and responsibilities.
• Excellent computer skills including:
   - Experience using spreadsheets
   - Experience using computerized accounting systems
   - Proficiency with using Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word and Microsoft Power Point
• Proven ability to extract and analyze complex data and develop financial reports to provide analysis, forecasting, and trending.
• Demonstrated ability to learn new software quickly, and to apply such knowledge to daily and ongoing work.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

• Professional experienced in Higher Education or similar Non-Profit.
