The successful candidate will support, and lead research activities focused on biophysical modeling of the Great Lakes system. Responsibilities include numerical model development, application, and integration, particularly in areas involving FVCOM (Finite Volume Community Ocean Model), biogeochemical models such as ERSEM (European Regional Seas Ecosystem Model), LEEM (Lake Erie Ecosystem Model), and FVCOM-GEM (General Ecosystem Model). The candidate is expected to contribute to and lead proposal development as Principal Investigator (PI) or Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI), actively participate in scholarly publication efforts, and collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams that integrate Earth system modeling, data assimilation techniques, and observational analysis for environmental prediction.

Procurement Specialist Advanced Power Systems Research Center (Near Houghton County Airport)
The Procurement Specialist is responsible for the lifecycle of APSRC purchases, from the time of purchase to the time of disposal. The position manages and oversees all purchasing activities of the center. This position determines the appropriate method of procurement, submits all purchase requests, reconciles purchases to the appropriate center or project index, tracks inventory, and disposes of inventory once the center determines there is no longer a need for the inventory.
Research Engineer Main Campus (Houghton, MI)
This position serves as an advocate and technical resource for Michigan’s local (city, village, county) transportation agencies. The position will provide engineering technical support for activities underway at the Center for Technology & Training, which includes work with the Michigan Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP), the Great Lakes Environmental Infrastructure Center (GLEIC), the Bridge Load Rating Program, the Roadsoft asset management software package, and other research projects. The position requires a strong background in civil engineering (roads or bridges).
Research Engineer / Scientist I - Environmental Remote Sensing SAR Specialist Michigan Tech Research Institute (Ann Arbor, MI)
The Research Scientist I – Remote Sensing SAR Specialist position provides support for MTRI programs focused on the development and application of remote sensing and geospatial analysis to solve governmental and societal needs through sponsored research. Knowledge of remote sensing theory and an understanding of remote sensing applications for environmental and/or Earth science research is required. The applicant should be experienced with the theory and application of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) for environmental research. The applicant will be expected to help develop proposals for remote sensing research projects that apply their knowledge of sensing and image processing to research questions. The applicant will also be expected to conduct fieldwork in remote environments. Examples of current research areas the Remote Sensing Scientist may support include wildland and prescribed fire mapping and effects assessment, Great Lakes aquatic sensing, invasive species mapping, wetlands assessment, wildland fire danger and emissions mapping, processing and analysis of remote sensing data through custom coding and analysis, and improved geotemporal visualization of complex data and patterns. Postdoctoral Scholar, Environmental Microbiology Main Campus (Houghton, MI)
Michigan Technological University is seeking a postdoctoral research associate to contribute to an interdisciplinary project at the intersection of marine microbial ecology, environmental microbiology, and marine engineering. This project is part of a large interdisciplinary team aimed at developing a system for conversion of marine dissolved organic matter into electricity using microbial fuel cells. We are looking for a postdoctoral research associate to lead efforts to develop a microbial consortium that can be used in a microbial fuel cell for conversion of marine organic matter to electricity. This candidate will perform experiments to better link the extent to which dissolved organic matter composition and microbial community composition interact to determine dissolved organic carbon biodegradability and potential for electricity generation in a microbial fuel cell. The successful candidate will have previous experience with marine microbial ecology, anaerobic microbiology, and/or microbial community characterization.

HRI is seeking a Senior Scientist or Engineer to be Director of THERC and join our interdisciplinary organization. The Director of THERC will lead the growth of the center through the hiring and mentoring of active researchers.
