Job Description Summary

The Michigan Tech Testing Center is committed to creating a safe, accommodating, quiet environment where all students can excel.

The Testing Center Manager is responsible for the efficient and secure administration of various exams including accommodated course-based exams, make-up exams, placement exams, and sponsored exams. This role involves coordinating test schedules, managing testing center staff, and ensuring a controlled and fair testing environment.

The Testing Center Manager implements and enforces strict security protocols to maintain the integrity of testing materials and is often involved in troubleshooting technical issues related to testing software and equipment.

Additionally, the Testing Center Manager interacts with students, faculty, and staff, to provide excellent customer service by addressing inquiries, offering information about testing procedures, and resolving any issues that may arise.

The Testing Center Manager plays a critical role in maintaining compliance with university policies, industry standards, and legal regulations related to test administration. The manager also keeps abreast of advancements in testing technology and best practices to continually improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the testing center.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

  • Test Administration: Manage the scheduling, coordination, and administration of various exams, including course-based accommodated exams, make-up exams, placement exams, and sponsored exams.
  • Security and Integrity: Implement and enforce strict security protocols to maintain the integrity of all testing materials and ensure a fair and secure testing environment.
  • Staff Supervision: Lead, schedule, and supervise a team of testing center staff, including testing proctors and administrative support personnel. Provide training and support to ensure consistent and high-quality service. Review and approve Testing Center staff timesheets.
  • Customer Service: Interact with faculty, students, and staff to address inquiries, provide information, and resolve issues related to testing services. Strive to create a positive and supportive atmosphere for test-takers.
  • Additional Testing Services: Manage the coordination of test transcription. Manage any necessary grading and generation of grade reports for bubble answer sheets.
  • Technology Management: Oversee the use of testing software and technology to facilitate a smooth testing process. Troubleshoot and address technical issues promptly.
  • Compliance: Stay current on testing industry standards, regulations, and best practices. Ensure compliance with university policies and testing requirements.
  • Data Management: Maintain accurate records of test-taker information, exam results, and other relevant data. Generate reports as needed for university administration.
  • Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

  • Bachelor’s degree

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

  • Strong leadership and management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills to interact with faculty, students, and staff.
  • Exceptional organizational skills to manage schedules, coordinate resources, and maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to adapt to changes and evolving technologies in the testing industry.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in education, educational administration, psychology, or a related field, or substantial experience in testing administration or educational services desired.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

  • Ability to lead and supervise a team of testing center staff, providing guidance and support.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact with students, faculty, and staff, and to articulate testing policies and procedures.
  • Exceptional organizational skills to manage test schedules, coordinate resources, and oversee daily operations.
  • Effective problem-solving skills to address technical issues, resolve conflicts, and handle unexpected situations during test administration.
  • Ability to adapt to changes in testing technologies, policies, and procedures.
  • Skills in training and developing staff to ensure consistency and high-quality service in test administration.
  • Proficiency in using various computer programs.
  • Keen attention to detail to ensure accuracy in test administration, record-keeping, and compliance.
  • Ability to collaborate with other departments, faculty, and external entities for the smooth functioning of the testing center.
  • Working within deadlines, especially during peak testing periods, to ensure the efficient administration of exams and timely reporting of results.
  • Experience in responsibly handling confidential information.
  • Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

  • Knowledge of best practices in test administration, including scheduling, security measures, and compliance with testing regulations.
  • Knowledge of online testing platforms, and computer-based testing technologies.
  • Knowledge of university policies related to testing, academic integrity, and student conduct.
  • Familiarity with national exam providers (e.g., ETS, Pearson, CertiPort) and their respective testing procedures.
  • Knowledge of data management principles for maintaining accurate records of test-taker information, exam results, and related data.
  • Knowledge of security protocols to ensure the integrity and confidentiality of testing materials.
  • Knowledge of effective customer service practices to address inquiries, provide information, and resolve issues in a positive manner.
  • Knowledge of ADA best practices as they relate to the operation within a testing center environment.
  • Experience with Google Suite of applications.

Work Environment and/or Physical Demands

  • The manager is primarily based in the testing center facility, which may include a mix of computer-based testing labs, exam rooms, and administrative offices.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.

Required Training and Other Conditions of Employment

Every employee at Michigan Technological University will receive the following 4 required trainings; additional training may be required by the department.
