Job Description Summary

This is an exciting opportunity to join Michigan Tech’s dynamic and progressive Human Resources team!

As a Compensation Analyst, you will play a crucial role in designing, implementing, and administering the university's compensation programs. This position offers a unique opportunity to lay the foundation and contribute to the success of a vibrant academic community and a growing Human Resources team while ensuring fair and competitive compensation practices.

Reporting directly to the Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO), you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the seamless implementation of fair compensation practices and delivering high level total rewards services.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

• Conduct position evaluations, create and review job classifications, prepare job descriptions and determine salary ranges for all staff positions, considering internal equity and external market trends.
• Collaborate with university HR partners, the Equal Opportunity Compliance department, and other department leaders to gather and analyze data on job roles, market trends, and industry benchmarks to inform compensation decisions.
• Conduct analysis of qualifications and work experiences for appropriate staff placement.
• Develop, implement, and administer compensation policies and programs to attract and retain top talent.
• Stay current on compensation trends, legislation, and best practices to ensure Michigan Tech remains competitive in the job market.
• Conduct regular salary surveys and analyze data to ensure the university's compensation practices are aligned with peer institution and industry standards.
• Provide guidance and support to HR and leadership in matters related to compensation, including job offers, promotions, and salary adjustments, organizational restructuring, and salary survey analysis.
• Lead the annual analyses of the compensation system to determine whether there is gender-, race-, or ethnicity-based disparity and to satisfy federal and state obligations.
• Facilitate the university’s annual salary review process in coordination with the Finance department.
• Participate in the development of compensation-related training programs for managers and employees.
• Plan and develop analyses, reports, and presentations, as requested.
• Assist with data entry into HRIS after completion of annual salary review process, annual benefits enrollment process, etc., as needed.
• Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in university continuous improvement initiatives and change management activities.
• Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.
• Perform specially assigned projects and tasks as assigned by the CHRO.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

• 1-2 years of experience as a compensation analyst.
• Demonstrated ability to perform statistical analyses on compensation systems to determine whether there is gender-, race-, or ethnicity-based disparity.
• Working knowledge of computer software programs, including Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and Adobe Acrobat products.
• Demonstrated ability to use advanced features in Excel to retrieve, analyze and generate reports.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Capability to uphold the confidential nature of human resources work

Desirable Education and/or Experience

• Master’s degree
• Three plus years of experience as a compensation analyst.
• Prior experience in higher education, education-related industries, or other non-profit organization.
• Two plus years of project management experience or change management leadership.
• Outstanding analytical and critical evaluation skills
• Continuing education. Certifications in Employee Compensation such as Certified Executive Compensation Professional (CECP), Certified Compensation Professional (CCP), Professional in Human Resources - Compensation (PHR-CA), or Senior Professional in Human Resources - Compensation (SPHR-CA)
• Demonstrated success in, or potential future contributions to, working with persons from diverse backgrounds, creating a sense of belonging, and fostering a fair, objective, welcoming place to work for persons with a wide variety of personal characteristics and viewpoints
