Responsibilities and Essential Duties Advise undergraduate and minor-seeking students in the current undergraduate programs and serve as graduate coordinator, and assist the graduate program directors in the current graduate programs in Applied Computing. Assist students with degree planning to include courses, concentrations, minors, co-ops, internships, Enterprise, study abroad, and other enriching opportunities, including student goals and interests. Coordinate Summer Youth and Explorations in Engineering/Women in Engineering programs within the college. Show empathy, patience, and understanding while working to assist students. Manage registration conflicts (filled sections, prerequisite waivers, waiting lists, etc.) Review and evaluate previous coursework regarding degree requirements for the College of Computing undergraduate programs. This includes assisting students with course scheduling and registration and managing registration conflicts and waivers. Create and foster connections with students which is necessary for promoting student success. Provide academic and emotional support and guidance for students. Provide resources and professional development necessary for student success (i.e., mental health services, Wahtera Center for Student Success, and Student Wellbeing Support Program, MySSP). Be available to students by keeping regular office hours, in-person or online. Create and update flowcharts and other advising materials. Assist students in interpreting University requirements, policies, regulations, and procedures. Conduct outreach to at-risk students based on mid-term performance (especially first-year students), and post-semester academic probation/suspension. This includes helping students understand the implications of their choices, academic performance, and academic standing, as well as implementing strategies for success. Be a creative problem solver and student advocate while providing flexibility, within the confines of established standards of the degree curriculum, and departmental and university policies Assist students continuing at Michigan Tech for graduate studies with application expectations, Senior Rule policies, and acceleration plans. Represent the College of Computing and the Department of Applied Computing undergraduate program to prospective students, parents, and educational partners. Review previous coursework for prospective transfer students regarding degree requirements and advise transfer students transitioning into the College of Computing programs regarding scheduling and further transfer credits. Collaborate with College of Computing faculty, Registrar's office, Career Services, Transfer Services, Dean of Students office, and other campus services (e.g., Mental Health & Well-Being Services, and Disability Services) as needed to assist students in areas such as career advising, study skills, academic support/assistance, documenting disabilities, and time management. Participate in yearly curriculum review and change processes, program assessment for internal and external reviews, and provide support for ABET accreditation of degree programs. Participate in the selection process for scholarships and awards for undergraduate students. Communicate student achievements for the selection process for scholarships and awards. Participate in appropriate department and university-level committees, including the undergraduate committee(s). Assist the curriculum committee with course schedule planning and registration processes. By charter, the person holding this position is a voting member of the Department of Applied Computing. Assist and coordinate with the department chair to develop and implement procedures to increase retention. Assist the department chair with creating degree program-related marketing and promotional materials. Assist and coordinate in planning and participating in student recruitment activities and outreach events (e.g. Open House, Preview Day, Summer Youth Programs, Orientation, etc). Assist the department chair with promoting relationships with companies that hire students for co-ops, internships, and full-time employment. Maintain and stay current with an understanding of the job role, academic advising, policies, guidance and information within the department, college, and university. Keep abreast of developments in the field of advising by reviewing materials from NACADA and similar organizations, and attending advising conferences and training. Other duties may be assigned. Required Education, Certifications, Licensures Bachelor’s degree that can be applicable to the essential duties & responsibilities of the position. Required Experience Experience working in undergraduate higher education student services or a closely related area. Desirable Education and/or Experience Master’s degree in the STEM-related field, counseling, or education, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired. One year of related professional experience. Experience using Degree Audit Reporting Systems, Banner (for accessing student academic information), and WebFOCUS Experience working with diverse groups of students Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities Superior interpersonal and written/oral communication skills. Demonstrated ability to use judgment when dealing with confidential information. Demonstrated ability to take the initiative to solve problems. Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively with faculty, staff and students.
