Job Description Summary

The College of Business at Michigan Technological University invites applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor in Economics. The position requires teaching undergraduate economic courses and significant involvement with teaching and student focused service, including program coordination, curriculum development, and student recruitment and retention efforts. The successful candidate will demonstrate expertise in Applied Environmental Economics and must be able to teach a wide variety of courses, including Environmental Economics, Energy Economics, Mathematical Economics, Principles of Economics, and Economic Decision Analysis. A PhD in Economics is desirable but exceptional candidates with a master’s degree and candidates near completion of their PhD will be considered.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

Must be able to teach a diverse portfolio of undergraduate economic courses, including Environmental Economics, Mathematical Economics, and large sections of Principles of Economics and Economic Decision Analysis.

Must be significantly involved with teaching and student focused service at the university, college, and program levels. This includes program coordination, curriculum development, and contributing to activities that support the mission of growing the program, such as mentoring students, participating in recruitment activities, advising student organizations, and engaging with alumni and industry.

Must contribute to the life and culture of the college and program by engaging students inside and outside of the classroom.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

Master’s degree in economics or a related field

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

One year of teaching economics courses at the college level.

A record of pedagogical achievement and teaching excellence (corresponding to rank and experience), which could include innovative teaching strategies, curriculum development, and creativity relevant to instruction.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

Ph.D. in Economics or a related field.
Two or more years of teaching undergraduate economics courses.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

Expertise in Applied Environmental Economics.

Must be able to teach a variety of classes, including Principles of Economics, Economic Decision Analysis, Mathematical Economics, and Environmental Economics.

A record of service activities (corresponding to rank and experience), which may include professional service, community service, university service, or student-oriented service.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

Teaching experience in at least one of the following areas is desired:

  • Environmental Economics
  • Economic Decision Analysis
  • Energy Economics
  • Mathematical Economics

Demonstrated success in, or potential future contributions to, working with persons from diverse backgrounds, creating a sense of belonging, and fostering a fair, objective, welcoming place to work for persons with a wide variety of personal characteristics and viewpoints.

Language, Mathematics and/or Reasoning Skills

 

Work Environment and/or Physical Demands

The work environment is that of a typical office and/or classroom setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.

Required Training and Other Conditions of Employment

Every employee at Michigan Technological University will receive the following 4 required trainings; additional training may be required by the department.
