Job Description Summary

The Institute of Computing and Cybersystems (ICC) at Michigan Technological University (Michigan Tech) promotes collaborative, cross-disciplinary research and learning experiences in the areas of computing education, cyber-physical systems, cybersecurity, data sciences, human-centered computing, and scalable architectures and systems. As part of its mission, the ICC creates and supports an arena in which faculty and students work collaboratively across organizational boundaries in an environment that mirrors contemporary technological innovation. The ICC has 60 members, organized into six research centers, which represent more than 20 academic disciplines at Michigan Tech. Member scientists collaborate to conduct impactful research, make valuable contributions in the field of computing, and solve problems of critical national importance. The ICC seeks to hire outstanding scientific or engineering research scientists to collaboratively develop their research portfolios in all areas of computing, core science and applied. Priority will be given to applicants that can show research achievements in the six areas represented by the ICC Centers: computing education, cyber-physical systems, cybersecurity, data sciences, human-centered computing, and scalable architectures and systems. Consideration will also be given to exceptional candidates that work on the edges of these areas. Successful candidates will show evidence of potential to both collaborate effectively with research teams and also lead an externally-funded, independent research program. Candidates should bring interesting innovative ideas to build additional collaborations across academic disciplines and provide expertise that bridges existing competencies to positively impact the success of others on campus. Successful candidates will exhibit depth of knowledge in their field(s) while exhibiting breadth and a strong desire to engage others in interdisciplinary work to advance the missions of the Institute and the University.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

Develop, plan, lead, and participate in ongoing and new research projects, with the expectation of planning and coordinating research and development tasks in collaboration with other principal investigators
Lead teams and participate as an integral team member on multi-disciplinary research to solve governmental and societal needs for a diverse set of current and new research areas, including core and applied computing
Be able to deal with issues encountered in data processing and analysis to ensure scientifically valid data collection and analysis
Evaluate, select, and apply the results of data collected and research projects undertaken; describe and share any concerns about the results or methodology, and recommend and/or implement mitigation strategies
Contribute technical expertise in core and/or applied computing at a primary and co-author level to conference presentations, journal articles, and technical reports, and be able to take the lead on preparing technical reports
Lead and contribute to competitive proposals for external research funding including development of specific tasks to accomplish the proposed project aims
Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work
Synthesize research information and results into non-technical language for a variety of audiences
Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

Ph.D. degree in Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, Mathematics, or related fields with an emphasis on core and/or applied computing, OR
M.S. degree in Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, Mathematics, or related fields with an emphasis on core and/or applied computing and at least 6 years of experience in a research-focused position

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

Practical, demonstrated knowledge of one or more programming languages (Python, Julia, Java, C, C++, etc.)
Experience with command-line operations using the Bash/Unix shell (including Mac OSX or Linux)
Demonstrated organizational ability and attention to detail
Demonstrated ability to lead and participate in team projects
Proficiency with computer applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software
Demonstrated ability in translating scientific research products into non-technical language

Desirable Education and/or Experience

Publication design and layout experience (e.g., LaTeX / Overleaf)

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication and presentation skills
Demonstrated ability to develop and test new hypotheses and ideas that integrate across disciplines
Demonstrated ability to contribute to competitive grant proposals
Demonstrated ability to clearly communicate complex ideas through symposia, methods documentation, reports, and publications
Demonstrated ability to meet and manage deadlines
Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize, and manage multiple projects and types of activities
Demonstrated ability to work with accuracy, precision, and attention to detail
Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate in both technical and non-technical terminology at a variety of technical-competency levels
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff
Demonstrated knowledge and execution of statistics in analysis and presentation of research findings

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

Ability to participate in ITAR regulated research
Existing relationships with funding agencies and organizations
Previous experience serving as a Principal Investigator or Co-Principal Inve stigator on sponsored grants or contracts
Evidence of an established network to facilitate research collaborations
