Job Description Summary

Michigan Technological University and the Department of Applied Computing invite applications for an instructional track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Teaching Professor in the Mechatronics, Electrical, and Robotics Engineering Technology (MERET) program. Applicants with the education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and accomplishments commensurate with a higher rank may be considered for an appointment at the rank of
Associate or Full Teaching Professor, or Professor of Practice.

The successful candidate will have the technical expertise and industrial experience to teach undergraduate courses in the Electrical Engineering Technology and Mechatronics degree programs. In addition, candidates will have responsibility for the maintenance and improvement of teaching laboratories and laboratory equipment.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

The position has two primary responsibilities:
1. Teaching (50%)
The successful candidate will teach courses in basic electronics, electronic devices and circuits, electrical machines, digital electronics, and other courses in electrical engineering technology. The typical course load for this position is two courses per semester. All courses have a laboratory component.
Create innovative instructional material and laboratory experiences.

2. Lab Supervisor and Safety Liaison (50%)
The successful candidate will supervise the labs in Mechatronics, Electrical, and Robotics Engineering Technology Program and act as a safety liaison. The duties include but are not limited to:
- Perform skilled work to troubleshoot, calibrate, repair, and maintain various electronic equipment
- Collaborate with the IT department to ensure that all the labs have current and needed software packages installed and are working properly. Perform software troubleshooting as needed.
- Maintain inventory records of laboratory supplies, materials, and equipment upgrades. Restock the supplies as needed.
- Act as a safety liaison for all MERET labs, report potentially hazardous electric equipment to the supervisor, and perform all needed actions to remedy safety concerns.
- Train laboratory assistants on the safety aspects.
Additional departmental duties include but are not limited to:
- Assist in building and maintaining relationships with industry partners, particularly regarding laboratory development.
- Participate in program assessment activities related to accreditation.
- Participate in student recruitment activities and other department and university services.
- Integrate safety practices into daily activities and apply about continuous improvement strategies to everyday work.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

MS in electrical or computer engineering, electrical or computer engineering technology, or a closely related field in engineering or engineering technology, from an accredited institution.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

Minimum of 2 years of relevant industrial experience.
Evidence of effective teaching at the secondary or postsecondary level or in industrial training programs.
Evidence of experience in an electronics or industrial laboratory setting, including laboratory maintenance and improvement.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

Professional certifications in electronics, electrical machinery, industrial control, automation, or related areas.
Teaching experience at the postsecondary level, including laboratory teaching.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

Demonstrated commitment to undergraduate teaching and student success.
Evidence of strong oral and written communication and presentation skills.
Evidence of hands-on technical skills for maintaining and improving electronic laboratory equipment.
Evidence of engineering software skills related to job performance.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

Knowledge in industrial robotics, programmable logic controllers, mechatronic systems, automation, and controls.

Language, Mathematics and/or Reasoning Skills

 

Work Environment and/or Physical Demands

The work environments include that of a typical office and/or classroom setting and that of an electronics laboratory which could include 120/208V 3-phase and line voltages and electrical machinery. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.

Required Training and Other Conditions of Employment
