Job Description Summary

The Department of Humanities at Michigan Technological University invites applications for a Writing Center Assistant Director and non-tenure track Instructor for the Department of Humanities, to begin August 2022. Candidates should have experience with learning support programs; office management and staff coordination; classroom experience teaching in composition, technical writing, professional writing, grant writing, etc.; and familiarity writing center pedagogy and administration. Primary responsibilities are assisting in designing, implementing, and administering Writing Center services that support the development of undergraduate students’ communication skills. The teaching load is 2 courses (6 hrs.) per semester.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

● Assist the Writing Center Director in planning and carrying out all aspects of managing the Writing Center
● Aid in daily supervision of the Writing Center student staff, including schedules, contracts, payroll, and professional development
● Compile and maintain Writing Center records and reports
● Draft, design, and edit documents and resources for Writing Center and campus use
● Develop, organize, promote, and present workshops in and out of classrooms
● Attend meetings, workshops, and seminars, as well as read publications, to enhance personal and professional development
● Collaborate with faculty and staff to promote Writing Center activities within the university
● Teaching 2 courses (6 hrs.) per semester in either composition, technical writing, editing, or writing center practicum, as needed.
● Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives
● Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

● Bachelor’s Degree in Education, English, Rhetoric, Communication, or related fields

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

● Experience with learning support programs
● Management and staff coordination experience
● Classroom experience teaching in composition, technical writing, professional writing, grant writing, etc.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

● Master’s Degree in Education, English, Rhetoric, Communication, or related fields

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

● Familiarity with writing center pedagogy and administration
● Strong understanding of grammar, style, punctuation, mechanics, and usage
● Ability to assist others in writing across the disciplines
● Ability to compose in multiple modalities
● Demonstrated computer proficiency
● Willingness to utilize new technologies
● Deadline oriented
● Able to work both collaboratively and independently
● Communicate effectively in a timely manner
● Able to work comfortably and cooperatively with a diverse array of constituencies within the university community
● Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff
● Demonstrated commitment to contribute to a safe work environment.
