Job Description Summary

Health Research Institute (HRI) is seeking an Assistant, Associate, or Senior Research Engineer or Scientist to join our interdisciplinary organization. We look forward to welcoming an exceptional researcher who is willing to build new collaborations, drive innovation, and lead an externally-funded research program. Priority applicants will show an understanding of HRI’s membership, their research, and be able to identify at least three possibilities for future collaboration. The ideal candidate is a self-starting, driven researcher with a desire to perform exceptional work while contributing expertise to other labs and faculty.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

1. Develop an externally funded research program
2. Collaborate with HRI members to develop, grow, and execute new research projects and initiatives.
3. Possess an ability to identify issues with methodology, experiments, and within teams, and resolve them in a compliant, tactful manner.
4. Serve as a primary and co-author on research outputs, including but not limited to publications, reports, presentations, and conference proceedings.
5. Maintain a safe, compliant office and laboratory environment.
6. Demonstrate an ability to communicate research to a wide audience, including fellow researchers in other disciplines, the public, University administration, students, and practitioners.
7. Participate in HRI and inter-institute meetings, events, and conferences.
8. Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.
9. Some travel may be required.
10. Other duties as required.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

• Ph.D. degree in human health related field, including but not limited to biology, biomedical engineering, chemistry, chemical engineering, cognitive sciences, computing, kinesiology, mathematics, physiology, or social sciences,
OR
• Masters degree in human health related field, including but not limited to biology, biomedical engineering, chemistry, chemical engineering, cognitive sciences, computing, kinesiology, mathematics, physiology, or social sciences with at least 3 years research experience
• Must be qualified to be a PI on a federal research grant

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

• Experience in federal grant writing
• Excellent track record of research output, including publications and presentations
• Experience working with interdisciplinary, diverse teams of researchers and students
• Demonstrated organizational ability and attention to detail
• Demonstrated ability to lead and participate in team projects
• Proficiency with computer applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software
• Demonstrated ability in translating scientific research products into non-technical language

Desirable Education and/or Experience

• Previous experience working in a soft-funded position.
• Previous experience working with federal grant management platforms, like NIH Assist, FastLane, or Research.gov.
• Prior interaction with review boards, like IRB or IACUC.

• Excellent written/oral communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to participate in team projects.
• Demonstrated commitment to contribute to a safe work environment.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff.

Additional Information

The Health Research Institute (HRI) at Michigan Technological University seeks to nurture, expand and accelerate current research and outreach activities at Michigan Tech by establishing a nationally visible research hub, promoting on- and off-campus collaborations and upgrading research infrastructures, creating an environment that enhances the probability of securing external funding, and getting directly involved in community health and education issues by partnering with local health providers. With 51 members from 11 departments across campus, we are a thriving, cooperative research community. In addition to research, the Institute sponsors activities to improve community health, a student journal club, graduate fellowship programs, a faculty mentoring program, and several social and networking events throughout the academic year.
