Job Description Summary

Alberta is an unincorporated community 8 miles south of L’Anse and is the site of the Ford Center. Alberta is managed by MTU’s College of Forest Resources and Environmental Science. The Facility Manager is responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of all facilities within Alberta and nearby as assigned. The Facility Manager is to maintain a safe and comfortable environment for students, faculty, staff, and town residents in a cost-effective manner under minimum supervision.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

1. Perform and coordinate maintenance at the Ford Center, including snow removal, spreading salt on decks and steps, lawn care, minor plumbing, carpentry and electrical work, servicing of heating and cooling equipment, winterizing and opening-up facilities as needed.
2. Responsible for the cleaning and maintenance of equipment at the Ford Center, including vehicles, machinery, tools and health and safety equipment (including fire extinguishers and smoke alarms).
3. Responsible for snow removal for Alberta town roads and building access.
4. Supervise temporary maintenance workers and others assisting with maintenance at the Ford Center.
5. Train temporary employees for the tasks they are hired to perform.
6. Provide support for research activities at the Ford Center when requested through the Ford Center Director.
7. Check and maintain gates on Ford Center and Forest properties.
8. Responsible for the preparation of the classroom facilities for programs at the Ford Center.
9. Read meters monthly and report the results to the Operations Manager.
10. Ensure that a supply of firewood is available for the recreational use and for the cordwood boilers.
11. Attend required training for safety when needed.
12. Assist others when needed in other roles at the Ford Center.
13. Ability to be trained from and to work in OSHA regulated confined spaces.
14. Other duties as assigned.
15. Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.
16. Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

• High school diploma, with a minimum of two years in a related trade school or an Associate Degree in Construction Technology or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

• Four years experience in building operations and maintenance including electrical, mechanical, architectural, HVAC, water systems, and refrigeration systems.
• Two years experience operating heavy machinery such as backhoe, road grader, skid-steer, Pettibone carry lift.
• Two years experience working with the general public/customers.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

• Building maintenance experience in an athletic, research, or academic facility
• Two years of functional supervision of maintenance/custodial personnel.
• Licensed builder, plumber, or electrician.
• Experience using personal computers, including word processing and spreadsheet software.
• Experience working at facilities that include both indoor and outdoor tasks.

• Demonstrated knowledge of computers including email and search engines.
• Demonstrated ability to understand and work from blueprints, sketches and schematic diagrams.
• Excellent interpersonal, customer service and oral/written communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to independently organize and prioritize work assignments.
• Demonstrated ability to learn and follow instructions.
• Demonstrated ability to work harmoniously with people in varying situations, and in all areas when assigned.
• Demonstrated understanding of safe operating and maintenance procedures.
• Possess a valid driver’s license and meet Michigan Tech University’s vehicle use requirements.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff.
• Demonstrated commitment to contribute to a safe work environment.

Every employee at Michigan Technological University will receive the following 4 required trainings; additional training may be required by the department.
