Job Description Summary

The Department of Humanities at Michigan Technological University invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor position in the field of Communication and Media Studies, or a closely-related field, with specialization in digital media and/or data journalism.

We seek candidates focused on social media issues involving such topics as algorithmic discrimination and data justice, platform economies, governance/regulatory frameworks, infrastructures (technical and/or material), surveillance, media industries, and/or publics (e.g., studies of misinformation/disinformation, civic engagement, platformized news and journalism). Candidates may have experience/interest in methodological approaches including qualitative, quantitative, critical, interpretive, or mixed-methods. Ability to teach methods and tools for data collection and analysis is highly desirable, as well as a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, justice, and human flourishing that are the hallmarks of the Humanities.

The successful applicant will enhance our research focus on technology and communication in the public interest, and demonstrate a commitment to enabling the cultural and social mobilization of information technologies and practices to reduce and redress harms, and create opportunities that engender greater justice, equity, inclusion and sense of belonging.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in areas of expertise. The usual tenure-track teaching load is 2 courses (6 hrs.) per semester.
Carry out a program of research.
Perform department and/or university-level service.
Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work and commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

Preferred candidates should receive their PhD in Media and Communication Studies, or closely related field by August 1, 2022.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

A record of excellent teaching and scholarly work in the field of media and communication studies or a closely related field.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

Experience/ability to teach topics such as algorithmic discrimination and data justice, platform economies, governance/regulatory frameworks, infrastructures (technical and/or material), surveillance, media industries, and/or publics (e.g., studies of misinformation/disinformation, civic engagement, platformized news and journalism). Experience/ability in teaching methodology, particularly data collection and analysis.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

Demonstrated record and continued potential for excellence in research and teaching in the field of media and communication studies, or a closely related field, with specialization in digital media and/or data journalism. Strong written and oral communication and presentation skills. Ability to teach effectively at the graduate and undergraduate level.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

Experience/interest in cross-disciplinary collaboration; experience/interest in DEIS initiatives.

Language, Mathematics and/or Reasoning Skills

 

Work Environment and/or Physical Demands

The work environment is that of a typical office and/or classroom setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.

The Humanities department offers doctoral and master’s degrees in the interdisciplinary Rhetoric, Theory, and Culture program and undergraduate major degrees in Communication, Culture, and Media; English; and Scientific and Technical Communication.
