Job Description Summary

Michigan Technological University and the College of Engineering invites applications for Department Chair in the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The Chair leads the Electrical and Computer Engineering faculty in their mission of excellence in education, research, and service. We seek an individual with the vision and experience to: elevate the department’s prominence in research within the fields of electrical, computer and robotics engineering; further our strong tradition of educational excellence; and grow our B.S, M.S. and Ph.D. programs.

The Chair is the chief administrative officer of the department and is responsible for the department’s administration, hiring, promotion and budget as well as being the leader in continuously improving the culture of inclusion and excellence in teaching and research. The Chair serves as the primary liaison between the department and the rest of the University and external constituents, and is expected to foster collaborations both internal and external to the university that advance the department’s mission.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

● Serve as chief administrative officer of the department with responsibility for all aspects of the educational, research, and service activities within the department.
● Provide strong leadership for excellence in teaching, service, and research while promoting a culture of safety, inclusion and continuous improvement.
● Effectively engage the department and other stakeholders in executing the department’s vision and strategic plan, ensuring alignment of the department’s vision, plan, and goals with those of the College and University.
● Manage the department’s finances responsibly and strategically to achieve short­ and long-term goals.
● Recruit, develop, and retain an outstanding and diverse faculty; support faculty in research and educational endeavors; and guide the mentorship of junior faculty.
● Increase the recruitment and retention of a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.
● Supervise department faculty and staff; conduct progress reviews of untenured faculty and make recommendations on reappointment, tenure, and promotion cases; conduct performance reviews of all department faculty.
● Increase funding for the department through individual and collaborative efforts and by leveraging existing resources.
● Establish relationships with alumni, academic, industry, and government groups to promote the goals of the department in academics and research and their funding.
● Contribute to University advancement activities by reaching out to prospective donors, leading stewardship activities for current donors, and, as appropriate leveraging department resources in support of growth of total resources available to support the department.
● Serve as department spokesperson and advocate within the university and with external constituents; actively promote the success of the department’s students, faculty, and staff.
● Oversee and ensure quality of ABET and university assessment activities.
● Provide leadership for activities to improve the quality of the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degree programs.
● Proactively promote and conduct activities that engage students, faculty, and staff from all backgrounds and demographics to cultivate and sustain an inclusive environment.
● Identify safety-related knowledge, skills, abilities, and training needed for positions within the department and opportunities for continuous learning and improvement of safety.
● Encourage continuous improvement practices among employees. Commit to applying continuous improvement strategies to strategic goals and leadership skills.
● Other duties as assigned.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

● An earned Ph.D. degree in electrical or computer engineering or a closely related field.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

● Scholarly products and activities appropriate for a tenured appointment in Electrical and Computer Engineering.
● Demonstrated supervisory, budgetary, and resource allocation accomplishments in an academic, government or industrial setting.
● Demonstrated potential for leadership in an academic, government or industrial setting.
● Demonstrated experience working at, or in collaboration with, science and/or engineering programs at the university level.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

● Experience working with engineering programs at the university level.
● Experience developing curriculum in a field closely related to one or more of our department degrees.
● Experience supervising professional staff.
● Experience fostering a flexible and inclusive work environment.
● Experience generating resources through fundraising.
● Experience with strategic planning.
● Experience working in, and with, industry.
● Experience promoting a culture of safety.
● Experience working with U.S. funding agencies.

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering has 669 undergraduate students, 117 graduate students, 23 faculty, and 10 support staff. The department has active research programs in image and signal processing, remote sensing, robotics, communications and sensor networks, electric energy systems, and electro physics, and is housed within 50,000 sq. ft. of contiguous space. Electrical & Computer Engineering is one of nine departments in the College of Engineering. The college has a total of 3566 undergraduate students and 652 graduate students, while the University has enrollments of 5774 undergraduates and 1232 graduates.
