Job Description Summary

Prepare, assemble, and maintain equipment, supplies, and chemicals for first year chemistry laboratories (two courses, enrollments typically near 1200 students per academic year, in up to 66 sections annually). Assist laboratory supervisor with endeavors necessary to ensure meaningful, high quality, hands on, efficient, and safe laboratory experiences for students.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

● Prepare laboratories to ensure safe and timely operation of the teaching labs.
● Prepare solutions and reagents used in the labs.
● Set-up and remove chemicals, supplies, and equipment for each lab session.
● Coordinate tracking and checking out of equipment.
● Maintain the preparatory room and facilities in a clean and orderly condition.
● Maintain inventory of chemicals, supplies, and equipment; restock as needed.
● Maintain chemical, supplies, and equipment i nventory databases.
● Maintain university required chemical inventory database.
● Maintain lab equipment, such as electronic balances, centrifuges, UV-Vis spectrophotometers, pH meters and electrodes, and calibrate equipment as needed.
● Assist with ordering of chemicals and supplies.
● Maintain Safety Data Sheet (SDS) binders.
● Maintain safe operations of laboratory facilities and equipment.
● Maintain security of facilities, equipment, and chemicals.
● Coordinate waste collection and disposal.
● Conduct and document safety training for prep assistants.
● Assist with safety training for students and teaching assistants.
● Supervise student prep assistants; assist with supervising teaching assistants.
● Communicate effectively with the lab supervisor, students and graduate teaching assistants.
● Assist with teaching when needed.
● Assist with course preparation on Canvas LMS.
● Assist with outreach activities when needed.
● Function as acting laboratory supervisor when needed.
● Work non-standard hours, as required.
● Other duties may be assigned.

This position supervises student employees, both undergraduate and graduate.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry, or equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

One year experience with general chemistry laboratory courses, including supervision of instructors.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

Master of Science degree in chemistry or closely related field.
Three years experience with general chemistry laboratory courses.

Demonstrated ability to safely manage chemicals and equipment.
Demonstrated commitment to performing tasks with accuracy and attention to detail.
Demonstrated proficiency in evaluating and ameliorating safety risks and promoting a safe work environment.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

Demonstrated flexibility to adapt to changing circumstances.
Experience with on-line course management software (Canvas)
