Job Description Summary

The Linux Administrator will demonstrate strong hands-on knowledge of Linux operating systems, including both workstation and server varieties while supporting enterprise computing infrastructures. The position requires a solid background with managing Linux system configurations. Examples of systems and support services that the candidate will be proficient with include, but are not limited to, file sharing (cross platform, e.g. NFS, CIFS), utilities, Ansible, disk encryption, configuration management and authentication via Active Directory. The successful candidate will show demonstrated hands-on experience with automation and scripting to support integrated architectures. The position is based at Michigan Tech Research Institute in Ann Arbor, MI (www.mtri.org).

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

1. Support and maintain existing Linux desktop and server infrastructure.
2. Deploy new Linux desktops and servers as needed.
3. Support, maintain, and update computer systems.
4. Troubleshoot and repair computer systems.
5. Participate as part of the team charged with making MTRI NIST-800-171, DFARS Clause 252.204-7012, and CMMC compliant and maintaining compliance.
6. Continue to improve performance by being aware of new technologies and software products, participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, and participating in professional organizations.
7. Accept ownership of, and responsibility for responding to, new and varied requests.
8. Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.
9. Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.
10. Other duties as assigned.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or other computer-related discipline or equivalent work experience.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

● 1 to 3 years of experience in computer/network support and administration.
● 1 year of experience administrating Linux systems.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

● Experience in scripting and/or coding.
● Experience developing and maintaining STIG compliant Linux desktop and server images.
● Experience leveraging utilities to patch and manage Linux systems.
● Management of IT infrastructure.
● Windows administration.
● Security+ certification.
● Experience using software monitoring and compliance tools, such as NESSUS, SPLUNK and SCAP.
● Experience with network backup systems.
● IT helpdesk experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

● Ability to obtain a U.S. Department of Defense security clearance, which requires United States citizenship. May not possess dual citizenship.
● Excellent written/oral communication skills.
● Demonstrated organizational ability and attention to detail.
● Ability to take direction, but work without continuous oversight.
● Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment with respect to significant matters related to job duties.
● Demonstrated commitment to contribute to a safe work environment.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

● Knowledge of information assurance and cyber defense policies and best practices.
