Job Description Summary

The Center for Diversity and Inclusion (CDI) is seeking a dynamic professional for the position of Multicultural Student Success Coordinator to promote and drive its mission to optimize the success of students from historically marginalized groups. The CDI engages in counseling and program development that fosters retention and graduation, creates safe spaces for students from multiple social and cultural identities, and cultivates a deeper understanding and appreciation of diversity, equity, inclusion, and a sense of belonging among the Michigan Tech community. Under the supervision of the director at the Center, the coordinator is responsible for establishing, implementing, and assessing programs and services in support of its mission. The ideal individual needs to be committed to student-centered philosophy, engagement, practices and be a strong collaborator.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

1. Individual counseling with CDI students to promote their retention and graduation from Michigan Tech.
2. Develop, implement, coordinate, and assess programs that complement and enrich student academic experiences, promote identity exploration, and enhance leadership skills.
3. Connect students to opportunities for academic and personal development including student organizations, conferences, workshops, grants and scholarships, and careers and graduate school.
4. Assist student organizations to engage in positive collaboration.
5. Provide training and workshops on topics surrounding diversity, equity, inclusion, and a sense of belonging to various departments as needed.
6. Work with other offices to achieve the CDI mission, and serve as a member on various committees representing the CDI as needed.
7. Attend events and work flexible hours as needed. Some evenings and weekends will be required.
8. Other duties as assigned.
9. Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.
10. Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

● Bachelor's Degree in sociology, education, ethnic studies, intercultural communication, anthropology, or related area or equivalent combination of education and experience in a related field from an accredited institution required.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

● At least one year of professional experience in education, student affairs, or comparable experience.
● Strong organizational and planning skills, including a strong attention to detail, setting priorities, and time management.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

● Master's degree in sociology, education, ethnic studies, intercultural communication, student affairs, anthropology, or related area.
● Demonstrated experiences developing and managing recruitment and/or retention-based programs for historically marginalized students.
● Experience in student-based training and programming related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and a sense of belonging.
● Experience with identifying educational challenges and barriers faced by historically marginalized students.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

● Knowledge and understanding of issues significant to diverse communities.
● Ability to plan and implement educational and informational programs in a diverse cultural environment.
● Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff. 

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

● Website development and maintenance, databases, social media, graphic design, and student tracking systems.

Work Environment and/or Physical Demands

● Attend events and work flexible hours as needed. Some evenings and weekends will be required.
● The work environment is that of a typical office and/or classroom setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate, but can occasionally be higher.

Required Training and Other Conditions of Employment

Every employee at Michigan Technological University will receive the following 4 required trainings; additional training may be required by the department.

The CDI provides individual holistic counseling and educational services for undergraduate and graduate students and collaborates with other departments on campus to assist students in meeting the challenges associated with attaining a degree at a major research institution.
