Job Description Summary

The Department of Biological Sciences at Michigan Technological University invites applications for a Lecturer in Human Biology, (non-tenure-track faculty position). This position will be responsible for teaching human biology related classes and academic advising.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

1. Teach departmental undergraduate lectures and lab courses related to human biology assigned by the Department Chair.
2. Implement inclusive instructional strategies that support student learning and a sense of belonging.
3. Advise biological sciences baccalaureate students in all academic aspects of their programs of study to include courses, minors, co-ops/internships, study abroad, accelerated MS program, and other career-broadening opportunities; connecting students to appropriate resources and services as needed.
4. Evaluate student progress and check degree schedules for certification of graduation in cooperation with the Registrar’s Office.
5. Assist students in understanding university requirements, policies, regulations, and procedures.
6. Collaborate with student affairs to assist students in career advising, study skills, and time management.
7. Create and update advising materials, such as program flowcharts.
8. Represent the Department of Biological Sciences and help coordinate outreach and recruitment activities (e.g., campus visit program, Open House, Preview Day, Bioathlon, etc.).
9. Serve in appropriate departmental and university committees, such as the department’s curriculum committee, to assist in program assessment and curriculum development.
10. Functional supervision over clerical support staff and student employees.
11. Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.
12. Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. 

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

Master’s degree in Biological Sciences or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities are acquired.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

Two years of professional or administrative experience.
Two years of experience teaching college courses as the instructor of record.
Experience using personal computers and basic software knowledge including word processing and spreadsheet software.
Experience advising undergraduate students.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

Experience of working with high school/college students.
Experience using desktop publishing and Banner software.
Experience teaching human anatomy and physiology courses and labs.
Experience using learning managements systems, such as Canvas LMS, as well as other online learning platforms.
Experience teaching using synchronous video, recorded video, or other hybrid teaching methodologies.

The work environment is that of a typical office and/or classroom setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
