Job Description Summary

MTRI is seeking a highly motivated, intellectually curious professional to help support multiple projects for our government and commercial customers. The Research Engineer/Scientist I - Optics and Spectral Scientist will bring expertise in linear and non-linear spectroscopy, optics, and the formulation and solving of inverse problems. The successful candidate will have a strong background in physics, computational sciences, and experimental design. The position is based at MTRI in Ann Arbor, MI (www.mtri.org).

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

1. Participate as an integral team member on multi-disciplinary research relating to applying technological skills to solving governmental and societal needs.
2. Provide technical expertise for experimental design, formulation and solving of inverse problems, and data analysis to ongoing research programs.
3. Assist with algorithm development and prototyping.
4. Contribute to developing new research thrusts in the fields of theoretic and applied physics.
5. Contribute technical expertise to symposia, journal articles, and technical reports.
6. Prepare and deliver reports or presentations of research projects/analysis results to project sponsors as appropriate.
7. Contribute to the generation of proposals and external funding.
8. Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.
9. Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives. 

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

Ph.D. degree in Physics

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

• Experience with optical systems and linear and non-linear spectroscopy.
• Experience with algorithm design and prototyping.
• Proficiency in at least one of the following: C, C++, Python, Java, MATLAB, or equivalent language.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

• Experience with solving inverse problems.
• Experience with signal processing.
• Experience evaluating the performance of algorithms on simulated and/or measured data.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

• Ability to obtain a Department of Defense security clearance, which requires United States citizenship with no dual citizenship status.
• Excellent interpersonal, oral/written, and presentation communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to participate in team projects.
• Demonstrated commitment to contribute to a safe work environment.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

• Ability to clearly communicate complex ideas at meetings and symposia.
• Ability to contribute to competitive grant proposals.
