Job Description Summary

The College of Engineering at Michigan Technological University invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for the position of Chair of the Engineering Fundamentals (EF) Department to begin July 1, 2021. The Chair will lead the EF faculty in their mission of excellence in teaching, STEM educational research, and service. We seek an individual with the vision and experience to elevate the department's prominence in the First-Year Engineering program, further our strong tradition of education excellence, and grow our Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSE) program.

The Chair is the chief academic officer of the department and will lead a multidisciplinary team of eight faculty and one staff member and will report directly to the Dean of the College of Engineering. 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

  • Provide strong leadership and ensure mentorship for excellence in teaching, STEM educational research, and service.
  • Promote a culture of safety, equity, inclusion, and continuous improvement.
  • Lead the efforts to improve the outstanding First-Year Engineering and Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSE) programs.
  • Recruit and retain outstanding and diverse First-Year Engineering and BSE students.
  • Recruit, develop, and retain an outstanding and diverse faculty; support faculty in teaching and STEM educational research; and guide the mentorship of junior faculty.
  • Effectively engage the department and other stakeholders to execute the department's vision, mission and strategic plan, ensuring alignment of the department's vision, plan, and goals with those of the College and University.
  • Serve as department spokesperson and advocate within the College, University and with external constituents; actively promote the success of the department's students, faculty, and staff.
  • Present First-Year Engineering program updates and changes to departments in the College of Engineering.
  • Engage and collaborate with the departments of the common First-Year courses and the Wahtera Student Success Center.
  • Engage and collaborate with other units such as Summer Youth and Admissions to improve First-Year Engineering student enrollment and diversity.
  • Teach First-Year Engineering courses regularly (one to two per year).
  • Engage in generating resources through fundraising.
  • Manage the department's resources (including finances, personnel, space, and equipment) responsibly and strategically to achieve short and long-term goals.
  • Oversee and ensure quality of ABET and University assessment activities.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

  • An earned degree in engineering/related field or equivalent experience.
  • An earned Ph.D. in a STEM or Education related field.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

  • Exceptional teaching record (minimum six years teaching experience).

Desirable Education and/or Experience

  • An earned Bachelor’s degree in engineering.
  • Experience in working with First-Year Engineering programs at the university level.
  • Experience in supervising professional staff.
  • Experience in fostering a flexible and inclusive work environment.
  • Experience in generating resources through fundraising and/or grants.
  • Experience working in and/or with industry.
  • Experience with program assessment.

  • Demonstrated leadership ability, including organizational and personnel management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships and to effectively recognize and resolve conflicts and mediate disputes.

  • Scholarly products and activities in the area of STEM educational research.
  • Success in planning, implementing, and leading strategic and tactical plan development.
  • Evidence of leadership in developing innovative and distinctive curriculum, education programs, research programs, and/or outreach activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to recruit, develop, and retain talented and diverse students, faculty, and staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and build relationships effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups.

  • Demonstrated fiscal responsibility and ability to manage budgets.

Work Environment and/or Physical Demands

The work environment is that of a typical office and/or classroom setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.

Additional Information

The Department of Engineering Fundamentals provides the College of Engineering departments with an innovative, active, collaborative First-Year Engineering program which supports 13 majors and approximately 900 students each year. The department also oversees the ABET accredited Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSE) program: a general engineering degree and incubator for new engineering degrees. The department provides an academic home and advising services for engineering students who have not yet declared a major and for the BSE students.
