Job Description Summary

As the Senior IT Security Engineer you will be responsible for the engineering and execution of security controls for University systems to meet our strategies as set by the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), IT leadership team, and other University or regulatory bodies. You will work closely with IT areas ensuring our controls are implemented properly and will provide security analysis and design assistance. You will coordinate with the Security Analyst to correct or mitigate any deficiencies identified in the system. This position works with the CISO to ensure that risks have been properly identified and mitigated. Additionally, this role will assist the CISO in determining the University's security goals and policies. Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

1. Engineer and assist in implementing security solutions in line with departmental and University goals.
2. Identify security risks and suggest solutions.
3. Maintain a deep understanding of University systems and their associated risks.
4. Collaborate with the CISO and other groups to design and implement security controls.
5. Work with the Security Analyst, CISO, and other members of IT to audit the current security state of IT resources.
6. Work with the CISO to develop security goals and associated policy.
7. You will help everyone apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.
8. Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

  • Bachelor's degree in system administration, information security or a comparable degree program; or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience from which the required knowledge and abilities can be acquired.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

- A minimum of 3 years of professional experience in an information security-related field
- A minimum of 2 years of professional experience implementing security controls

Desirable Education and/or Experience

- Experience with security auditing
- Experience with Linux or Windows server administration
- Experience with project management
- Certification in information security (GCIH, GCCC, CISSP, etc)

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

- Ability to obtain a U.S. Department of Defense security clearance, which requires United States citizenship. May not possess dual citizenship.
- Demonstrated ability to engineer and implement controls for complex security issues in an IT environment
- Experience in maintaining security policies based on standards, procedures and guidelines
- Demonstrated ability to work independently
- Demonstrated experience conveying complex security-related issues to both technical and non-technical audiences
- Ability to carry a cell phone, work outside regular business hours and be available on-site during an emergency
- Superb communication skills, including the ability to build solid working relationships with people of diverse personalities and professional backgrounds, with a focus on customer service
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff
- Demonstrated commitment to contribute to a safe work environment

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

- Experience designing and implementing controls related to NIST-800 series, DFARS, HIPAA, PCI-DSS, or similar standard
- Experience working with firewalls, VPN, IDS, IPS and vulnerability assessment systems
- Experience with network monitoring methodology
- Experience working in a higher education environment or an environment with an open, diverse network
- Experience working in a customer support environment
