Job Description Summary

Oversee the men’s and women’s varsity cross country and track & field programs at the NCAA Division II level. Responsibilities include recruitment, practice/event preparation, competition coaching duties, budget management, fund raising and promotion. Assist the Athletic Director in a leadership role to enhance the internal and external visibility and recognition of the Michigan Tech Track & Field and Cross Country programs. Teach activity courses in the Department of Kinesiology and Integrative Physiology.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

1. Oversee all aspects of the cross country and track & field programs.
2. Recruit quality student-athletes on a regional and national level.
3. Evaluate Michigan Tech team capabilities to manage/prepare team for competition; determine training and competition strategy.
4. Enhance and promote the internal and external visibility and recognition of the University and teams to alumni, campus and off campus groups.
5. Actively participate in fund raising activities.
6. Monitor and promote the academic success of student-athletes.
7. Represent and act on behalf of the university as directed by the Athletic Director.
8. Plan, develop and administer budgets.
9. Consult with Trails Operations Coordinator on maintenance of MTU Trail System.
10. Teach activity courses in the Department of Kinesiology and Integrative Physiology.

11. Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

• Bachelor’s degree

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

• Experience in coaching cross country and track & field student-athletes
• Experience using personal computers and basic software packages
• Competition experience at the NCAA or comparable level

Desirable Education and/or Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in exercise science / physiology
• Master’s degree
• Coaching experience at the NCAA or comparable level
• Athletic recruiting experience

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and public relation skills
• Excellent organizational, administrative, and prioritization skills
• Demonstrated excellent decision making capabilities
• Working knowledge of exercise science/physiology
• Demonstrated exceptional knowledge of endurance athletics
• Demonstrated commitment to comply with all NCAA and conference rules and regulation
• Experience with social media accounts
• Experience with recruiting database management

• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff.
