Job Description Summary

The College of Engineering at Michigan Technological University invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for the position of Department Chair in the Department of Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering Technology to begin July 1, 2020.

The Department was formed as a result of the migration of the MET program from School of Technology in July 2019. It currently has 6 faculty members (4 tenured/tenure track), around 170 undergraduate students, and a new, rapidly-growing MS Program in Mechatronics that is shared with the College of Computing.

The Chair will lead the Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering Technology faculty in their mission of excellence in education, research, and service. We seek an individual with the vision and experience to elevate the Department’s prominence in research and further our strong tradition of education excellence, and grow enrollment in both the undergraduate and MS programs.

The Chair is the chief administrative officer of the department and is responsible for the department’s administration, hiring, promotion and budget as well as being the leader in continuously improving the culture of inclusion and excellence in teaching and research. The Chair serves as the primary liaison between the department and the rest of the University and external constituents, and is expected to foster collaborations both internal and external to the university that advance the department’s mission.

The Chair will be responsible for migrating the BS in Engineering degree program from the Department of Engineering Fundamentals, as well as strengthening and growing that program within the College and Department.

As the Chair of a relatively new department, the Chair will be responsible for developing a strategic plan in collaboration with the College, developing a plan for alumni and industry engagement, and initiating a fundraising plan to support the mission and growth of the Department.

The Chair will be expected to be a campus champion for research and education in manufacturing, bringing together diverse constituents both on campus and off and leading the manufacturing efforts at Michigan Tech.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

Serve as the chief administrative officer of the department with the responsibility for all aspects of the educational, research, and service activities within the department.

Provide strong leadership for excellence in teaching, service, and research while promoting a culture of safety, inclusion and continuous improvement.

Effectively engage the department and other stakeholders in developing and executing the department’s vision and strategic plan, ensuring alignment of the department’s vision, plan, and goals with those of the College and University.

Manage the department’s finances responsibly and strategically to achieve short and long-term goals.

Recruit, develop, and retain an outstanding and diverse faculty; support faculty in research and educational endeavors; and guide the mentorship of junior faculty.

Increase the recruitment and retention of a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.

Develop a plan and grow enrollment in both the undergraduate and graduate programs.
Supervise department faculty and staff; conduct progress reviews of nontenured faculty and make recommendations on reappointment, tenure and promotion cases; conduct performance review of all department faculty.

Increase funding for the department through individual and collaborative efforts and by leveraging existing resources and identifying new resources.

Establish relationships with alumni, academic, industry, and government groups to promote the goals of the department in academics and research and their funding.

Contribute to University advancement activities by reaching out to prospective donors, leading stewardship activities for current donors, and, as appropriate leveraging department resources in support of growth of total resources available to support the department.

Serve as department spokesperson and advocate within the university and with external constituents; actively promote the success of the department’s students, faculty, and staff.

Conduct a thorough study of teaching efficiency in the Department as a unit in the College of Engineering, with a goal of freeing up faculty time for research and graduate programs.

Lead a comprehensive study of the curriculum, and implement changes needed to ensure that our graduates succeed in “Industry 4.0”, with its expansion into artificial intelligence, machine learning, programming and data analytics.

Develop and implement a plan for full external funding of Senior Design projects.  Integrate, stabilize and grow the BSE program after it moves into the Department from Engineering Fundamentals.

Oversee and ensure quality of ABET and university assessment activities.

Provide leadership for activities to improve the quality of the B.S. and M.S. degree programs.

Proactively promote and conduct activities that engage students, faculty, and staff from all backgrounds and demographics to cultivate and sustain an inclusive environment.

Identify safety-related knowledge, skills, abilities, and training needed for positions within the department and opportunities for continuous learning and improvement of safety.

Encourage continuous improvement practices amount employees. Commit to applying continuous improvement strategies to strategic goals and leadership skills.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

Earned Doctorate in Engineering, Technology, Manufacturing, Technical Education or closely-related field that complements the strengths of the Department.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

Scholarly products and activities appropriate for a tenured appointment as a full professor in MMET.

Demonstrated experience successfully working with diverse individuals.

The work environment is that of a typical office. The noise level in the work environment is usually low.
