Job Description Summary

Applications are invited for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Computational Mathematics. All research areas in Computational Mathematics will be considered, but candidates with expertise in areas related to data science (e.g., randomized numerical linear algebra, stochastic optimization, etc.) are especially encouraged to apply. The position is expected to be filled at the rank of Assistant Professor, but highly qualified candidates may be considered for appointment as Associate Professor.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

Establish a robust research program, as evidenced by a strong publication record and external funding. Advise graduate students at the MS and PhD level. Teach undergraduate and graduate courses, and assist in curricular evaluation and development. Participate in service activities at the department, college, and University level, and contribute to appropriate professional organizations and societies. Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work. Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

Earned PhD in Mathematics or a related field.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

The successful applicant should have a record of scholarship and be able to draw from relevant experiences to teach a variety of courses in mathematics.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

Established collaborations, research or teaching experience in mathematics.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

Applicants must have: (1) strong oral and written communication, computer and presentation skills; (2) effective and engaging teaching; and (3) passion to conduct research with students and colleagues.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

Versatility and technical expertise to teach fundamental courses as well as advanced mathematics courses to diverse students.

Language, Mathematics and/or Reasoning Skills

The work environment is that of a typical office and/or classroom setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.

The Department of Mathematical Sciences has 35 faculty members with interests in probability, statistics, computational mathematics, combinatorics, algebra, and number theory. It offers BS, MS and PhD degrees in both Mathematics and Statistics, and has a new MS in Applied Statistics that can be earned entirely through online course work. The department enrolls about 120 undergraduate students and 70 graduate students, and plays a key role in the university’s interdisciplinary programs in Data Science and in Computational Science and Engineering.
