Job Description Summary

The Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geospatial Engineering at Michigan Technological University invites applications for an assistant professor tenure-track faculty position in the area of structural engineering. Applicants for the position are required to have a PhD in civil engineering or a closely related discipline. Priority research areas include structural asset management, structural rehabilitation, bridge design and management, and artificial intelligence (AI) enabled civil structural design.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

Teach both undergraduate and graduate level courses. Develop a sustainable externally funded research program in one or more of the priority research areas (i.e., structural asset management, structural rehabilitation, bridge design and management, and AI-enabled civil structural design). Be recognized by your peers for your excellence in research and creation of knowledge. Publish research in peer-reviewed journals. Foster and contribute to a collaborative DEIS culture within the workplace. Engage in professional service activities within the department, university, community, and technical organizations. Employees are expected to apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work and commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

A Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a closely related discipline and a PhD in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a closely related discipline.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

Demonstrated potential for excellence in research, teaching, and scholarship in structural engineering.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

Experience in conducting research in one or more of the target areas (i.e., structural asset management, structural rehabilitation, bridge design and management, and AI-enabled civil structural design). Experience in classroom teaching, designing, and developing a new course at the university level. Experience in leading and advising a research group. Writing research proposals and publishing peer-reviewed papers. Registration as a professional engineer or the ability to become registered.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

Ability to conduct independent and collaborative research and publish peer-reviewed journals. Effective communication skills. Ability to teach courses related to structural engineering.

The work environment is that of a typical office and/or classroom setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.

The Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geospatial Engineering currently has 29 faculty members, 528 undergraduate students, and 112 graduate students. Externally-funded research is approximately $2.5M, and the Department is on a trajectory to double its graduate enrollment over the next five years. The CEGE Department has many teaching and research labs with state-of-the-art facilities and connections with industry, which provide instrumentation to support student education and research. Michigan Tech's graduates are eagerly sought by industry because of their hands-on training and rigorous coursework.
