Job Description Summary

The Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geospatial Engineering (CEGE) at Michigan Technological University invites applications for an assistant professor tenure-track faculty position in the area of geotechnical engineering. Applicants for the position are required to have a doctorate in civil engineering or a closely related discipline. Successful candidates will demonstrate an interest in developing strong research and educational programs within CEGE, and in collaboration with other programs at the university and with industry. Priority research areas include but are not limited to, computational geotechnics, data-driven and AI modeling, soil-structure interactions, soil dynamics, natural hazards, and offshore geotechnics. Successful candidates will also be committed to teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in civil engineering.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

Teach required and elective undergraduate and graduate courses for the Civil Engineering program.
Develop and sustain an active externally funded research program in geotechnical engineering.
Publish research in peer-reviewed journals.
Mentor graduate and undergraduate students in their academic and research endeavors.
Contribute to the continuity and accreditation of the Civil Engineering program.
Participate in service activities at departmental, college, and university levels and externally.
Contribute to initiatives aimed at promoting diversity and inclusion within the department and university.
Integrate safety practices into daily activities and commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a closely related field and a doctorate in civil engineering or a related engineering field

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

Experience in academic research related to geotechnical engineering or a closely related field.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

Previous experience in securing external research funding
Professional licensure, or ability to attain professional licensure, in civil engineering or a related field
Practical experience in civil engineering
Experience in teaching or instructional roles during postgraduate or doctoral studies

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

Ability to conduct independent and collaborative research and publish in peer-reviewed journals
Effective communication skills
Ability to teach courses related to geotechnical engineering (e.g., Soil Mechanics, Foundation Engineering, or similar)

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

Potential to develop robust, externally funded research programs
Ability to establish and maintain connections with industry professionals
Experience in interdisciplinary collaboration
Expertise in applying emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence or machine learning in geotechnical studies
Demonstrated success in, or potential future contributions to, working with persons from diverse backgrounds, creating a sense of belonging, and fostering a fair, objective, welcoming place to work for persons with a wide variety of personal characteristics and viewpoints.

Work Environment and/or Physical Demands

The work environment is that of a typical office and/or classroom setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
