Job Description Summary

The Department of Cognitive and Learning Sciences (http://mtu.edu/cls) at Michigan Technological University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in Human Factors Psychology, beginning in August 2023. Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

We seek a candidate with the ability to teach in-person courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, related to human factors, applied cognitive science, and general psychology. The candidate should have the potential to develop and maintain an active program of research in any area of Human Factors and have the potential to generate external grant funding for this work. Duties include teaching two courses a semester in either undergraduate and graduate coursework that supports our BS degrees in Human Factors and Psychology and our graduate programs in Applied Cognitive Science and Human Factors. This may include Introduction to Psychology, Research methods, Sensation and Perception, Learning and Memory, Human-Computer Interaction methods, and special courses in the area of the candidate’s expertise related to the application of psychology in real-world contexts. Other duties include developing/revising courses in the candidate’s area of specialty, establishing an independent research program and engage in research, scholarly and creative activities leading to publication, supervising students in research activities including undergraduate projects, MS theses, and Ph.D. dissertations, and participating in service to the department, college, university, and broader academic community. Candidates are expected to devote 40% of their effort to teaching, 40% to research, and 20% to university service.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

Ph.D. in Human Factors Psychology or a closely related field, with degree awarded by August 15, 2023.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

Have a record of scholarship and experience disseminating scholarly work in venues appropriate to the field of study.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

Post-doctoral research experience, with experience contributing to or submitting applications for external funding. 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

Be able to teach a variety of courses that contribute to the department's undergraduate and graduate programs.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

● Evidence of scholarly productivity with a research emphasis in any area of human factors, with a preference for expertise in areas related to health human factors, patient safety, transportation, human-robot or human-automation interaction, cyber security, human-systems integration, or sustainability. Preference will be given to candidates that can support interdisciplinary research that is aligned with one of Michigan Tech’s Research Institutes (Health Research Institute, Michigan Tech Transportation Institute, ICC - Human-Centered Computing) and complements existing strengths in the department.
● Experience generating external grant funding and/or acquiring contract work for human factors projects.
● Demonstrated excellence in teaching.
● Ability to engage and mentor both undergraduate and graduate students in faculty-directed research and funded human factors projects.
● Prior or planned activities in research, teaching, or service that increase engagement, inclusion, sense of belonging and/or culturally responsive mentorship of diverse individuals.

The Department of Cognitive and Learning Sciences offers BS undergraduate degrees in Psychology and Human Factors and MS and Ph.D. degrees in Applied Cognitive Science/Human Factors. Faculty interests typically bridge the space between applied and basic research, including attention, expertise, human-AI interaction, naturalistic decision making, computational modeling, cognitive neuroscience, health and wellness, and training/education. Faculty also have frequent collaborations with other disciplines, including Kinesiology/Integrated Physiology, computer science, and engineering. Michigan Technological University, one of the four major research universities in the State of Michigan, is located in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula adjacent to Lake Superior.
