Job Description Summary

Support the execution of tasks related to engineering projects. Project tasks include, but aren’t limited to, development, fabrication, assembly, troubleshooting, repair, and evaluation of ground vehicle electronics and related subsystems.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

• Build, repair, maintain, and occasionally design electrical and mechanical systems
• Perform electrical and electronics troubleshooting
• Vehicle systems integration
• Sensor maintenance & integration
• Fabricate custom electrical and electronics assemblies
• Cable harness construction and repair
• Manufacture and population of printed circuit boards
• Model hardware, produce schematics, and generate build documentation for
• Harness assemblies
• Electronic and electromechanical control systems
• Printed circuit boards
• Pre-build or as-built documentation
• Maintain lab equipment and facilities, and operate lab equipment and machinery in a safe manner.
• Participate in design activities with other staff members and customers.
• Assist in training, supervising and guiding students in above duties.
• Receive direction and training from Research Engineer I and higher.
• Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.
• Integrate safety practices into daily activities.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

• Associates degree in mechanical or electrical engineering or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired
• US citizenship and able to acquire a US DOD government security clearance.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

• 3 years of employment experience working with, building, and troubleshooting electronics
• 1 years of employment experience CAD/CAE systems for system design & documentation
• 1 years of employment experience working with electro-mechanical systems
• 1 year employment experience in automotive, machine controls & wiring

Desirable Education and/or Experience

• Experience with laboratory and field-testing
• Capable of effectively communicating across cultural boundaries and working harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty and staff.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

• Assemble, troubleshoot, and repair of electronic assemblies & systems
• Design and assembly of mechanical and electromechanical assemblies
• Configuring, programming, and operating vehicle electronics
• Vehicle bus configuration, data collection, analysis, and troubleshooting (e.g. CAN, J1939)
• Fabrication and calibration of custom instrumentation and sensors
• Ability to operate ground vehicle platforms

• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff. 

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

• Knowledge of military standards for designing/building electronics, harnesses, etc.
• Operation of Vector CANalyzer and hardware, Kvaser logging hardware
• Knowledge of TCP/IP networking, including configuration, troubleshooting, wiring
• Programming experience at any level with languages such as Python or MATLAB script
• Installation, calibration and usage of autonomous-related sensor systems including vision, LiDAR, and IMU
• Thorough knowledge of CAN networking from the bottom up, including SAE JAUS & J1939, FlexCAN, FD
• FCC Part 107 certification and/or experience piloting a small UAS

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee works near moving mechanical parts.

    The employee will be working both indoors and outdoors and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; work in high, precarious places, is exposed to fumes or airborne particles, and extreme heat and cold.

    The noise level in the work environment is moderate to very loud.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk; talk and hear; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and taste or smell. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee is occasionally required to sit and climb or balance.

    The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, color, and peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus.
