Job Description Summary

This position is a dual position that will be responsible for business consulting with the Sault Chippewa tribe entrepreneurs or business owners, and non-tribal entrepreneurs or business owners of the counties of Chippewa and Mackinac.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

1. Help business clients initiate, grow and improve operations. Areas of assistance may include strategic planning, process improvement, financial analysis, loan preparation, market diversification, human resources, and organizational leadership.
2. Build and maintain substantial portfolio of high potential clients.
3. Represent the SBDC and support initiation, growth, and maintenance of stakeholder relationships.
4. Maintain documentation as required by the SBDC and its funding sources, timely.
5. Stay abreast of full SBDC network initiatives and programming to advance the program and serve clients.
6. Attend all team meetings for the region, and special team meetings for state.
7. Facilitate business workshops on topics relevant to client base.
8. Business Consultant will connect with clients, remotely and travel for on-site visits.
9. Attend local events for economic development.
10. Facilitate student projects and/or internships
11. Facilitate workshops for SBDC peers
12. Other duties may be assigned.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

• Minimum of an Associate Degree in Business Administration, Accounting, or Finance.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

• 5 years’ experience in business operations: bookkeeping, procurement, marketing, or professional consulting experience
• Must live within Mackinac or Chippewa County.
• Must have owned a small business or worked in a family-owned small business.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

• BA in Business Administration, Accounting or Finance.
• Experience consulting with small businesses.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

• Moderate Accounting/Bookkeeping skills
• Ability to use Computer, printer, scanner, smart phone.
• Ability to cross over multiple media platforms to communicate at the regional and state level.
• Moderate ability to operate Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff.
• Demonstrated commitment to contribute to a safe work environment.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

• Established network with Sault Chippewa Tribe.
• Experience working with Sault Chippewa Tribe.
• Prior consulting experience with second stage companies
• Strong communication skills
• Experience with Quickbooks, an online POS systems.
• Desire to learn and grow skill sets.

Work Environment and/or Physical Demands

• WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work location will be shared space with the Sault Tribe EDC, some home office work and local day travel to clients place of business.
• Travel required to Houghton for team meetings and leadership events 3-4 times annually. Travel to lead center in Lower Michigan at least 1 time per year.
