Job Description Summary

The Department of Cognitive and Learning Sciences (http://mtu.edu/cls) at Michigan Technological University invites applications for a visiting assistant professor position beginning in August 2022. The contract term is 1 year, with an opportunity for renewal for a second year. While research is not required for this position, the visiting assistant professor will have access to shared laboratory space and participant pool to conduct research. There is an opportunity to engage in meaningful research, particularly if undergraduates can contribute.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

We seek a teacher-scholar with commitment to undergraduate student learning and inclusive pedagogy. The successful candidate will teach two courses during the first semester, with three courses in subsequent semesters. Courses will include Cognitive Psychology, Brain and Behavior, Culture and Cognition, and Introduction to Psychology. Other potential courses may include Research Methods, Educational Psychology, Sensation, and Perception, Critical Thinking, Developmental Psychology, or other courses in the candidate’s area of interest that also satisfy elective options in one of our concentration areas (cognitive, social, clinical, or human factors). We provide visiting faculty with mentoring in teaching and resources for professional development (e.g., conference travel funding).

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

Applicants must have completed a Ph.D. or be ABD in psychology, cognitive science, or a related discipline by September 2022. Teaching is the primary focus of this position. 

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

 

Desirable Education and/or Experience

Prior teaching experience is desired, but not required. We are especially interested in candidates with experience as the instructor of record for a course, as part of their doctoral training or in previous academic appointments.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

Strong communication and presentation skills. Potential for effective teaching at the undergraduate level. Knowledge and training in one or more of the content areas for teaching.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff.
