Job Description Summary

Advise mechanical engineering students in all academic and career aspects of their program of study including degree and course planning, co-ops/internships, registration, transferring of credits, and degree requirements. Represent the ME-EM department to prospective students and parents through individual visits and outreach activities. Coordinate ME-EM related pre-college programs and first year orientation for the department.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

Student Services
1. Assist students with degree planning to include courses, minors, concentrations, co-ops/internships, study abroad, and other broadening opportunities.
2. Check degree schedules for certification of graduation using the online degree audit system.
3. Represent the ME-EM department by meeting with prospective students and parents.
4. Review previous coursework for prospective transfer students with regard to degree requirements for the BSME and advise transfer students transitioning into the BSME program regarding scheduling, further transfer credits, etc.
5. Advise current students on transfer process as well (transfer credits after Michigan Tech matriculation).
6. Manage registration conflicts (e.g. filled sections, waiting lists, waivers, time conflicts, etc).
7. Conduct first year advising meetings.
8. Collaborate with ME-EM faculty, Career Services, the Dean of Students office, and other campus services as needed to assist students in areas such as career advising, study skills, academic support/assistance, documenting disabilities, and time management.
9. Conduct outreach to at-risk students based on mid-term performance (for first-year students), and post-semester academic probation/suspension status changes.
10. Be a creative problem solver and student advocate while providing flexibility, within the confines of established standards of the BSME curriculum and departmental/university policies.
11. Show empathy, patience, and understanding while working to assist students.

Administrative Services
12. Coordinate transfer credit evaluations within the department.
13. Maintain flowcharts and other advising materials (including ME undergraduate Advising web page).
14. Assist with the creation of departmental marketing and promotional materials.
15. Participate in program assessment and provide support for accreditation of degree program.
16. Participate in appropriate department and university level committees.
17. Coordinate Summer Youth Programs and other pre-college programming for the department.
18. Coordinate and participate in university and department events (e.g. First Year Orientation, Preview Day, Open Houses, advising meetings, Engineering Explorations, etc).
19. Supervise student worker in the advising office along with Engineering Academic Advisor II.
20. Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.
21. Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.

22. Other duties as assigned.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and/or engineering-related field.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

• One year of industry engineering experience or educational experience.
• Experience using personal computers and administrative software packages including email, calendaring, word processing, and spreadsheet software.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

• 5+ years of industry engineering or educational service.
• Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or in a relate engineering field.
• Experience using BANNER, uAchieve, WebFocus, Google Workspace, and/or WordPress software packages.
• Experience working with college and/or high school students.
• Experience working with students experiencing academic difficulty.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

• Demonstrated ability to design administrative processes.
• Demonstrated ability to work quickly and accurately in several applications simultaneously in a Windows or equivalent computing environment.
• Previous experience with academic advising/counseling.
• Previous experience in higher education or K-12 teaching experience, preference to prior university-level experience.
• Previous experience with graphic design/document layout.
• Previous experience with advanced spreadsheet tools (macros, etc).
• Previous experience with electronic marketing (email, social media, etc).
• Previous customer service experience, including presenting to customers (inside/outside sales, technical sales, etc).
• Previous experience in a position with multiple roles.
